Blink Mini (1st gen, BCM00300U): problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-17
Summary
The usual complaints are about ownership, not hardware: the Mini records nothing without a paid Blink plan or a separately sold Sync Module 2, and its 2.4 GHz-only Wi-Fi makes dropouts the most common setup problem. Keeping it running costs nothing in parts; the only recurring fee is the subscription, $39.99 a year for one camera on the Basic plan. It is a good buy under about $30; above $40 the Blink Mini 2 is the better pick.
Common problems and fixes
- Nothing is recorded without a paid plan or a Sync Module 2 — the most consistent complaint. After the 30-day trial the camera sends motion notifications and gives 5-minute live views only, with no free cloud storage and no local storage unless you add a Sync Module 2 and a USB flash drive. Fix: subscribe, or buy the Sync Module 2 and use your own flash drive. Not a warranty matter. [4][7][8]
- Wi-Fi connection failures and dropouts — the Mini is 2.4 GHz only, and Blink names poor signal as the most common cause of connection failure, asking for 3+ bars and at least 2 Mbps upload. Owners report setup trouble with dual-band routers and cameras going offline intermittently. Fix: move the router closer or add an extender; a 5 GHz network will not help. [1][15][16]
- Motion notifications or motion detection stop working — owners describe cameras that keep recording but stop sending push notifications (one case was fixed by turning off the AI video descriptions feature), and cameras that stopped detecting motion after a Sync Module firmware update until they were power-cycled. These are anecdotal threads, not a defect rate; the one-year warranty covers hardware defects. [17][18][10]
- No person or vehicle detection — Smart Detection is reserved for the Mini 2 and newer cameras; this model does not get it even with a subscription. There is no fix on this hardware; buy a Mini 2 if person detection matters. [11]
- Soft or overexposed video — TechGearLab’s 2025 retest found overexposure day and night that hid details, Consumer Reports called daytime images soft, and Safewise saw washed-out night video in partly lit rooms; Consumer Reports still rated nighttime video very good. No fix; placement away from bright windows helps. [3][6][21]
- Narrow 110-degree field of view, no pan or tilt — one of the smallest views in TechGearLab’s test pool. Fix: the $30 Pan-Tilt Mount (360-degree) accessory released in 2022. [3][4]
- Motion detection through glass is unreliable — Blink itself says window mounting gives unreliable results. [8][9]
Parts and consumables
Blink does not sell replacement parts for the Mini, so there are no consumables to buy. Optional add-ons, all sold separately:
- Pan-Tilt Mount (360 degrees) — $30 (CNET, 2022). [4]
Yearly running cost
- With the Blink Subscription Plan: Basic (1 device) is $3.99 a month or $39.99 a year; Plus (unlimited devices) is $11.99 a month or $119.99 a year. Prices rose for the first time since 2020 on 2025-10-08, from $3/$30 and $10/$100. [11][12]
- Without a plan: no cloud recording at all, so the only cost is the one-time Sync Module 2 plus a USB flash drive. No monthly fee. [8]
- Parts: none to buy.
- Electricity: the 5V/1A adapter draws very little; no owner electricity costs were reported.
- A typical owner on Basic pays $39.99 a year; on Plus, $119.99 a year. [11]
When it is a good buy
Prices found during research:
- $24.99 and up across three retailers (Consumer Reports, 2026-07) [6]
- $29.99 for the 1-camera black (Best Buy, 2026-10, from search-result text) [13]
- $44.99 for the 2-camera white set (Best Buy, 2026-10, from search-result text) [14]
- $29.99 tested against a $34.99 list price (PCMag, 2023-04) [2]
- $30 list price (TechGearLab, 2025-06) [3]
Thresholds:
- Under $30: strong value for a secondary indoor camera in an Alexa household, if you accept 1080p-only video and subscription recordings. [2][4]
- $31 to $40: fair; at this level cameras with free cloud tiers, like the Wyze Cam, are the better value. [5]
- Above $40: weak for this exact model — the Blink Mini 2 ($39.99 list) adds a spotlight, color night vision and person detection, and Blink’s own store now leads with the Mini 2K+ (from $49.99) and the Mini Pan-Tilt ($39.99). [20][19]
Alternatives: the Wyze Cam is the pick when a free cloud tier matters [5]; the Blink Mini 2 when you want person detection inside the Blink app [20]; the Mini 2K+ or Mini Pan-Tilt when buying new from Blink today [19].
