BLACK+DECKER BDCI20C: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-17
Summary
An entry-level 20V MAX impact driver kit (1,375 in-lb claimed torque, 3,000 RPM, 3,900 BPM, one 1.5 Ah battery, charger and a bit) for light home fastening. Independent testing ranked it eleventh of twelve drivers: slow, loud at 97 dBA, and the included pack finished only one set of test fasteners. Running costs are battery-dominated; it is a sensible buy at $60-80 and a poor one above $100.
Common problems and fixes
- Slow and weaker than its class — TechGearLab’s 2025 instrumented test scored it 44/100, 11th of 12 drivers: about 6 seconds to drive a 3-5/8 in. ledger screw into stacked plywood and 58 seconds for a lag-bolt drive-and-remove cycle, the slowest in the group; measured fastening torque averaged 115 ft-lb and it failed at 200 ft-lb. No fix; it is the budget-performance tradeoff. [1][2]
- Short runtime on the included battery — the 1.5 Ah pack completed only one full trial set (14 ledger screws plus one lag bolt driven and removed) and died before removing the lag bolt on the second set; Consumer Reports calls run time “limited”. The practical fix is a larger battery: a 4 Ah pack is sold separately. [2][3][4]
- Loud — 97 dBA average while driving ledger screws in testing. [2]
- Bulky and dated — at 168 mm it was the longest driver in the test group, with no belt clip, no quick bit-insert collet and no storage case. [2][5][3]
- One speed and torque setting — power cannot be dialed down for delicate fastening. [2][3]
Warranty: 2 years limited, per Consumer Reports and Extreme How To. [3][7]
Parts and consumables
- 20V MAX batteries and chargers — widely sold separately across the platform; at AFT Fasteners (2026-10) the kit is $155.17 and the tool-only BDCI20B is $219.90. [8]
- Screwdriving bits — one bit is included in the kit; bits are the consumable. [4][5]
Yearly running cost
Not enough data for a precise yearly figure. There are no subscriptions; ownership cost is dominated by the 20V MAX battery ecosystem. The kit ships with one 1.5 Ah pack, and the limited runtime means a larger 4 Ah battery is the likely practical extra purchase for heavier use; batteries and chargers are widely sold separately, including the tool-only BDCI20B variant. [4][2][3]
When it is a good buy
- About $60-80 is the sensible range for light home work: TechGearLab used an $80 list price (2025), SlashGear cited $79.99 (2024), Consumer Reports showed “from $79.99”, BestAdvisor last showed $58.99, and a Home Depot search snippet showed $66.60. [1][6][3][4][9]
- Above about $100 it competes poorly: it finished near the bottom of the 12-driver test group and several other drivers beat it on every measure. [1][2][3]
- Industrial reseller pricing is not a normal consumer anchor: AFT Fasteners lists the kit at $155.17 and the tool-only BDCI20B at $219.90 (2026-10). [8]
