Sound and volume

The speaker uses 2 x 30 W Class D amplification for a 3 1/4" woofer and a 0.6" tweeter, with a claimed 54 - 20,000 Hz range, 92 dB maximum SPL at 1 m and 64 dB bass capability at 1 m. TechRadar describes impressive low-frequency extension and substance, consistent balance even at volume, and good detail retrieval, with a smooth crossover and a slightly warm tonal balance; the limitation is a lack of ultimate scale for the size. RTINGS notes the small enclosure cannot get very loud and downmixes stereo content to mono unless paired. Android Bluetooth latency is reported as much higher than iOS latency.

Battery and charging

Battery life is rated at 24 hours at typical listening volume from the 3,300 mAh cell, and a full recharge takes about 3 hours at 5 V / 3 A over USB-C. TechRadar’s testing supports the 24-hour claim at modest volume. Power draw is low: 5 W typical and 0.12 W standby. Battery care matters: charge before first use, do not leave the battery fully discharged for weeks or months, recharge at least every quarter, store around 60-70% charge, and keep best performance between 20% and 80% charge. Avoid excessive heat and frequent top-up charging.

Build, repairability and warranty

The body is pearl-blasted anodised aluminium on top, waterproof leather on the strap and polymer below, at 576 g (1.27 lb) and 133 x 46 x 133 mm. Bang & Olufsen describes the design as modular, with a replaceable battery and repairability rather than scrapping, and the speaker is the first Cradle to Cradle Certified Bronze Bluetooth speaker. Standard warranty is 2 years, extendable to up to 5 years through Beocare registration in the Bang & Olufsen app. Maintenance is simple: clean with a dry cloth only, do not open the product, and refer servicing to qualified personnel. IP67 protection can diminish over time and is not rated for salt, ionised or soapy water; it covers temporary immersion only.

Is it worth it?

At the $249 US launch price (TechRadar, May 2025), TechRadar rates value five out of five, citing premium materials, build, app and sound against similarly priced rivals. What Hi-Fi? rates it four stars and argues the same money buys larger, louder alternatives such as the JBL Charge 6, roughly $50 less, or the JBL Xtreme 4 at a similar price. The reading: buyers who value build, design and app quality will find it compelling; buyers who want maximum loudness per dollar will not. Above about $299 the value case weakens unless the premium finish and cachet are specifically required. No subscription or capsule lock-in applies; the Bang & Olufsen app is free.

Which model this is

This page covers the 3rd Generation Beosound A1, designed by Cecilie Manz, sold in finishes including Natural Aluminium, Honey Tone, Eucalyptus Green, Warm Granite, Rustic Red and Lavender Purple. It is a distinct generation from the 1st and 2nd Gen Beosound A1 and the Beoplay A1; the 3rd Gen keeps the circular aluminium body and waterproof leather strap, adds an improved battery, and drops the Alexa voice control present on the 2nd Gen. Stereo pairing works between two 3rd Gen units or one 2nd Gen and one 3rd Gen. The Amazon listing is ASIN B0F8QR1Z4G. Do not confuse it with the earlier generations, which differ in battery, voice-control support and stereo-pairing compatibility rules.
