Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A 1.75 mm PLA filament sold as spooled rolls or refill, with an RFID tag for Bambu Lab AMS auto-recognition and a manufacturer TDS of mechanical, thermal and drying data. Check color consistency and AMS recognition before you commit to a bulk buy.

Strengths

  • AMS RFID auto-recognition and Bambu Studio printing profiles are advertised as convenience features.
  • A forum reviewer reported beige PLA Basic printed well and matched its color description.
  • Jade White PLA Basic was reported satisfactory for light-transmissive lamp shades.
  • Bulk pricing of $11.69 per roll at 10+ rolls was shown on the product page.
  • Documented TDS properties and drying and storage parameters are published by the manufacturer.
  • UL GREENGUARD 2904 certification and a biodegradable claim are stated on the product page.

Weaknesses

  • Color differences between spools of the same color were reported, including Jade White.
  • Refill filament tangles and filament stuck against the spool caused AMS hangups in a bulk purchase of black refills.
  • Small surface bubbles or dots were reported on a blue spool; moisture or a bad spool were both suggested.
  • Printing problems with black PLA Basic, including poor surface quality, were reported.
  • A blue refill showed twisting and brittleness where a beige spooled filament did not.
  • AMS RFID misidentification of Bambu Green PLA Basic as PLA Wood Brown was reported.

Full research notes and sources

Manufacturer guidance is 190-230 C at the nozzle and 35-45 C on the bed, with the fan on and a chamber temperature of 25-45 C. Nozzle sizes from 0.2 to 0.8 mm are listed, with retraction of 0.6-1.0 mm at 20-40 mm/s. The product page claims up to 258 mm/s, but only with a 0.4 mm nozzle, 0.4 mm line width and 0.2 mm layer height; the TDS states printing speed below 300 mm/s without the same condition set. No independent speed test was found, so treat the 258 mm/s figure as a conditional manufacturer claim, not a guarantee across colors and nozzle sizes. Drying is specified at 50 C for 8 h in a forced-air oven or 60-70 C for 12 h on a heated bed, with storage below 20% RH; the ABS spool is rated to 70 C, so follow the drying instructions rather than exceeding them. The material is not food-grade despite biodegradable and GREENGUARD 2904 low-emission claims.

Color consistency and moisture

The TDS lists saturated water absorption of 0.43% at 25 C and 55% RH, and gives drying parameters, but owners report surface bubbles or dots on a blue spool and visible color differences between spools of the same color, including Jade White. A beige spool printed well and matched its description, while a blue refill showed twisting and brittleness. No manufacturer tolerance or consistency specification for color was found, so color matching between spools is not guaranteed. Drying and sealed storage with desiccant are the recommended maintenance; AMS desiccant replacement guidance is documented. Some third-party spools may deform during drying.

AMS, RFID and refill use

RFID auto-recognition is advertised for AMS use and printing parameters are embedded in the tag, but at least one owner reported AMS misidentifying Bambu Green PLA Basic as PLA Wood Brown. Refill filament requires a spool, and some third-party spools may deform during drying. The reusable spool is ABS with 70 C temperature resistance, close to the 60-70 C heated-bed drying range, so drying instructions should be followed. Color count is inconsistent between sources: the product page text says up to 30 colors, while the color selector on the same page displayed 43 swatches.

Running costs

The manufacturer store showed $14.99 per roll and $11.69 per roll at a 10+ roll bulk price, with MSRP shown as $14.99. Shipping is shown as free on orders over $59 and returns as 30 days. Ownership costs are drying time and energy, desiccant, a reusable spool for refills, and storage containers; no proprietary consumable lock-in beyond AMS convenience was stated. At $11.69 per roll or below, PLA Basic is reasonably priced for users who need AMS RFID recognition and Bambu Studio profiles. At $13 to $15 per roll, value depends on whether AMS convenience, color range and documented TDS properties matter for the application. Above the manufacturer list price shown, owner reports of tangles, color shifts and RFID misreads make the premium harder to justify.

Is it worth it?

Value rests on AMS integration, color range and documented properties rather than the 258 mm/s speed claim alone. At the manufacturer store price shown of $14.99 per roll, or $11.69 per roll at 10+ rolls, it suits users who want AMS RFID recognition and Bambu Studio profiles and accept the reported consistency issues. Buyers needing exact color matching, maximum strength or heat resistance should look elsewhere.

Which model this is

This page covers Bambu Lab PLA Basic, a 1.75 mm PLA sold as spooled filament or refill with an RFID tag for AMS recognition, a net weight of 1 kg, and TDS version 3.0. No separate model number beyond the product name was found. Variants include spool versus refill and many color variants; the TDS is a single generic PLA Basic data sheet and does not state whether every color uses the same resin batch or has identical mechanical values. The product page advertises up to 30 colors.

The seed Amazon listing is ASIN B0CGR29R63. Do not confuse it with Bambu Lab PLA-CF, other Bambu filaments, or other brands’ PLA Basic lines, which are distinct products.
