Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

Bambu Lab PLA-CF is a carbon-fiber-reinforced PLA for rigid, matte-finish functional parts like brackets, jigs and housings. Check your printer before buying: it needs a hardened steel nozzle in 0.4, 0.6 or 0.8 mm and drying before use; 0.2 mm nozzles and stainless steel are incompatible.

Strengths

  • Clean matte finish with minimized layer lines, per owner reports.
  • Good dimensional accuracy and stability for fitted parts.
  • Suitable for rigid brackets, jigs, fixtures, covers and machine-side parts.
  • Works with 0.4 and 0.6 mm hardened nozzles.
  • Good bridging and overhang performance reported by owners.
  • AMS-compatible with RFID for intelligent printing.

Weaknesses

  • Abrasive: carbon fiber wears nozzles and extruder gears; hardened steel is required.
  • Brittle: poor fit for snap tabs, living hinges and other flexing parts.
  • Low heat resistance: parts did not survive a 50°C dishwasher program in one owner report.
  • Color-to-color inconsistency reported, with extrusion defects on some rolls.
  • Fiber shedding during handling; gloves and dust control recommended when sanding.
  • Must be dried before use; moisture worsens brittleness and AMS feeding.

Nozzle and printer requirements

The filament is carbon-fiber-reinforced and abrasive, so a hardened steel nozzle is required and stainless steel is not recommended; 0.2 mm nozzles are incompatible. Nozzle sizes of 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 mm are supported. Owners report extruder gear wear at roughly 450–500 hours on an A1 printer after abrasive use, so plan on nozzle and gear replacement as consumables. Print in a well-ventilated area and avoid sanding without gloves, since fiber shedding onto skin is reported.

Heat, durability and fit

“Stiffer” does not mean tougher. The bending modulus of 3950 ± 190 MPa in X-Y drops to 2260 ± 180 MPa in Z, so properties are anisotropic, and the heat deflection temperature is only 54–55°C. Owners and reviewers describe the material as brittle, making it a poor choice for snap tabs, living hinges and impact-prone parts. One owner reported PLA-CF parts failing a 50°C dishwasher program. For enclosures, brackets and jigs at modest temperatures it is well suited; for hot or flexible applications, look elsewhere.

Owners report clean matte surfaces, dimensional accuracy and good bridging. But color-to-color inconsistency is a recurring complaint: one owner printed a full spool of black PLA-CF without trouble while a blue spool showed missing extrusion and stringing, and filament grinding with extrusion gaps appears on some rolls. Whether batch and color consistency is documented is unknown, so test a new color before committing to a large run. Some users report good out-of-box results without pre-drying, but drying is required for best quality.

Running costs and consumables

Bambu’s store lists PLA-CF from $31.99 per 1 kg spool (Bambu Lab, 2026). Beyond the spool, ownership costs include a hardened steel nozzle, a filament dryer or dry box, desiccant, and possible nozzle or extruder-gear replacement. No regional price variation was found in the sources. No independent instrumented test of mechanical properties, dimensional accuracy or print quality was found; the published values come from the manufacturer TDS, and whether independent measurements match is unknown.

Is it worth it?

At the published starting price of $31.99 per 1 kg, PLA-CF costs more than standard PLA. Reviewers and owners find it worthwhile for rigid, visible functional parts where stiffness and a matte finish matter, and recommend standard PLA or PETG for prototypes, fit checks and flexible parts. No independent cost-per-part or durability data were found to set firmer thresholds.

Which model this is

This page covers Bambu Lab PLA-CF in Black, 1.75 mm, 1 kg, sold as filament-with-spool or refill. No separate model number or revision is published for color variants; the manufacturer treats the colors as one PLA-CF product line with 9 colors on the store page. Do not confuse it with Bambu PLA, PETG-CF, PAHT-CF or other carbon-fiber filaments. The Amazon listing for this product is ASIN B0DRPJWF4B.
