Audio-Technica ATH-M50x: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-19
Summary
The ATH-M50x is a wired closed-back studio monitor that has been in production since 2014, and the thing that usually goes wrong is the faux-leather earpads and headband, which crack, peel or flake after roughly 1–3 years of use. Keeping it running costs about $15–25 in earpads every 1–3 years, plus around $20 in the year a cable fails; no amplifier is needed. It is a strong buy at $150 or less, fair value up to about $170, and weak value above that.
Common problems and fixes
Earpad and headband pleather degradation — the most consistently reported issue: the faux-leather earpads and headband crack, peel, flake or harden after roughly 1–3 years, described across Reddit threads, forum posts and reviews. Audio-Technica’s own manual states earpads are consumable parts that deteriorate over time, so this is a known wear item, not a defect; the 2-year limited warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship but excludes normal wear. Fix: replace the earpads (about $15–25 for third-party sets, or directly from Audio-Technica) and wipe them with a dry cloth. [9][10][11][12][14][15][16][22][25]
Firm clamping force — out of the box the clamp is firm and causes pressure-point discomfort, especially for larger heads and glasses wearers, during the break-in period. The clamp relaxes with use; stretching the headband over books is a common owner trick, and aftermarket earpads change both clamp pressure and heat. [4][14][16][17]
Proprietary cable connection — the earcup uses a twist-to-lock 2.5 mm connector, not a standard 3.5 mm jack, which limits aftermarket cable options. Replacement cables cost about $20. [4]
No active noise cancellation — passive isolation is moderate: SoundGuys measured roughly 10 dB attenuation at 700 Hz and 33 dB at 4 kHz, with no isolation in the bass frequencies. Not suitable for flights or very loud environments. [4]
No inline microphone — no included cable has a mic or remote, and Audio-Technica has confirmed no adapter exists to add one. You cannot take phone calls without a separate solution. [5]
Hinge stop breakage — one Reddit owner reported a cracked plastic hinge stop around year 8–9, fixed with zip ties. Nobody has published a failure rate for the hinges or swivels, so treat it as a caution, not a trend; a hinge failure inside the 2-year limited warranty window would be a defects claim. [9][25]
Narrow soundstage — some listeners describe the soundstage as narrow, which affects immersion for orchestral and open-air recordings. [17]
Parts and consumables
Earpads — about $15–25 for third-party sets from brands like Brainwavz; Audio-Technica also sells replacement earpads directly. Owners replace them every 1–3 years as the pleather degrades. [1][4][16][24]
Carrying pouch — the included pouch is a vinyl drawstring bag that protects against surface scrapes but not drops; Audio-Technica sells a replacement pouch directly. [1][4]
Cables — three detachable cables are included (1.2 m–3.0 m coiled, 3.0 m straight, 1.2 m straight); proprietary replacements cost about $20. [1][4]
Yearly running cost
A typical owner spends $15–25 on a set of earpads every 1–3 years, which works out to roughly $15–25 per year at the shortest replacement interval and less if the pads last longer. Add about $20 in the year a cable fails. No amplifier is needed for most use cases, and there are no subscriptions. [4]
When it is a good buy
Observed prices from other retailers: Audio-Technica’s US site lists the ATH-M50x at $159 (October 2026); B&H Photo lists it at $159; SoundGuys listed $169 in August 2024; PCMag saw a $159 sale price in November 2022 against a $169 MSRP. Comparable bundles with a hard case and extra cables are listed at about $175–197 at B&H Photo and Sweetwater.
- At $150 or less it is a strong value for a wired studio monitor headphone: balanced sound, durable frame, detachable cables, parts availability and a 2-year warranty.
- From $151 to $170 it is fair value; compare against wireless alternatives such as the ATH-M50xBT2 or Sennheiser HD 450BT, which add Bluetooth and active noise cancellation at similar prices, unless wired simplicity is the point.
- From $171 to $200 it is weak value for the wired-only M50x; the 2025 ATH-M50xENSO limited edition at $199 is a cosmetic variant, not a performance upgrade.
- Above $200 it is poor value for the wired M50x.
