ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ3A: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-09
Summary
A 27-inch 1440p gaming monitor whose 180Hz Fast IPS panel delivers strong out-of-box color accuracy and low input lag, sold with a 3-year warranty. The compromises: 250-nit brightness with no functional HDR, a stand that tilts and swivels but never rises, and HDMI ports capped at 144Hz. Running costs are just electricity — no parts or subscriptions.
Common problems and fixes
- Stand has no height adjustment — tilt (+20° / -5°) and swivel (+20° / -20°) only, no pivot; owners upgrading from ergonomic monitors name this as the most common frustration. The 100 × 100 mm VESA mount lets you fit your own arm. [1][5]
- HDR is effectively non-functional — 250 cd/m² typical with no local dimming; TechPorn.ph measured up to 236 cd/m² in SDR and called HDR “just there to check the box.” One owner measured 300-350 nits in HDR mode, so results vary with panel and test. There is no fix; run it as an SDR display. [5][7]
- HDMI is capped at 144Hz — the two HDMI 2.0 inputs top out at 144Hz; only DisplayPort 1.4 reaches the full 180Hz. Use the DisplayPort cable from the box for PC gaming at 180Hz. [1][7]
- Built-in speakers are very basic — 2 × 2W, clear but extremely quiet even at full volume and without any bass. A headset or external speakers are worth budgeting for. [4]
Parts and consumables
No replaceable parts or consumables reported.
Yearly running cost
Just electricity (under 35W draw with a 65W external adapter). No filters, pods or subscriptions; nothing in the sources reports any recurring cost. [1]
When it is a good buy
- $200 or below: strong value for 1440p 180Hz with excellent color accuracy and a 3-year warranty. At that level it competes well with the ViewSonic VX2728J-2K at $199 and the LG 27GR83Q at $249. [4][5]
- $201-250: fair — it wins on color and input lag but lacks the HDR, height-adjustable stand and USB hub some rivals include.
- $251-300: weak — monitors with DisplayHDR 400 and better ergonomics, including ASUS’s own VG27AQL3A ($299 MSRP, tested at $209), become available. [3][4]
The VG27AQ3A was listed at $249.00 at CDW and at the ASUS eShop USA in this research pass (2026-10). [11][3]
