Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A 27-inch 1080p Fast IPS gaming monitor with 240 Hz native (280 Hz overclocked) refresh, 1 ms response, and motion-blur reduction that runs alongside VRR. Check the pixel density and HDR before buying: 1080p on 27 inches is 81 PPI and DisplayHDR 400 adds little.

Strengths

  • 240 Hz native, 280 Hz overclocked, with 1 ms response suits competitive play.
  • VRR and motion-blur reduction can run together via ELMB Sync.
  • Fast IPS panel with good color and viewing angles, 100% sRGB claimed.
  • Fully ergonomic stand with height, tilt, pivot and swivel.
  • 36-month warranty and a 3-year security-update period.
  • GamePlus, Shadow Boost and GameVisual presets built in.

Weaknesses

  • 1080p on a 27-inch panel is 81 PPI, low for desktop use.
  • DisplayHDR 400 only, not a meaningful HDR experience.
  • Mediocre IPS contrast with glow in the corners on dark screens.
  • ELMB Sync locks overdrive high and causes overshoot below about 200 Hz.
  • Basic 2 W speakers and no USB hub.
  • Overclocking can flicker or black-screen when disabled.

Refresh rate and response time

The 240 Hz native refresh, overclockable to 280 Hz, with 1 ms GTG response is the reason to buy this monitor. Overclocking to 280 Hz can introduce flickering or occasional black screens when disabling it.

Image quality and HDR

Contrast is a typical IPS 1000:1 with mediocre black levels and IPS glow in the corners on dark screens. The manufacturer claims 100% sRGB where DisplayNinja measured 99% on the VG279QM.

Ports, stand and features

DisplayPort is required to reach 280 Hz: the two HDMI ports top out at 240 Hz at 1920 × 1080. The manufacturer page lists DisplayPort 1.4 for the VG279QM1A where older VG279QM coverage lists 1.2, and the same page shows an HDMI 2.1 logo while its connectivity text says HDMI 2.0, so the HDMI revision is unresolved. There is no USB hub. The stand offers tilt from +20° to -5° per the manufacturer, while independent VG279QM coverage lists up to 130 mm height adjustment, -5°/33° tilt, 90° pivot, ±90° swivel and a 100 × 100 mm VESA mount. Integrated speakers are 2 × 2 W and basic. GamePlus, GameVisual with seven presets, Shadow Boost and DisplayWidget Center are included, plus four low-blue-light filter levels.

Value and which buyer

Value depends on price. IGN lists an MSRP of $279 for the VG279QM and DisplayNinja describes it as going for around $400 at the time of its review. Given the 1080p pixel density and DisplayHDR 400 only, the VG279QM1A is a strong buy for competitive esports play around $250 or less, fair in the $251–$350 range if 280 Hz with IPS color and full ergonomics matter, and weak above about $350 where higher-resolution or better-HDR alternatives compete. Buyers who do not need 280 Hz should compare 1440p 144 Hz monitors at similar money. The 36-month warranty covers non-OLED panels from the purchase date with the receipt as proof; bundled accessories such as cables are not covered, and ASUS accepts up to 3 bright dots and 5 dark dots over 36 months under its pixel policy for non-ZBD models. ASUS also lists a 3-year security-update support period ending 31/12/2026.

Which model this is

This page covers the ASUS TUF Gaming VG279QM1A, a 27-inch 1080p monitor in ASUS’s TUF Gaming line. It is a revision of the older VG279QM, which differs at least in DisplayPort version, so not every sub-specification is identical. Do not confuse it with the ASUS VG279Q (144 Hz), the VG259QM (24.5-inch), or the VG279QM without the 1A suffix. The Amazon listing for this model is ASIN B0C84G7TNH. ASUS lists a 3-year security-update support period ending 31/12/2026 and a 36-month warranty for this non-OLED monitor.
