Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

Check your use case before buying: the VA panel has slow pixel response with visible black smearing in fast-paced and dark scenes, and the stand only tilts.

Strengths

  • Deep blacks and high contrast from the VA panel suit visually rich games and movies.
  • High refresh rate up to 165 Hz over DisplayPort.
  • Compact, light chassis (7.34 lbs without stand) fits small desks and travels easily.

Weaknesses

  • Slow pixel response causes visible black smearing in fast-paced and dark scenes; overdrive and ELMB did not fully fix it.
  • Tilt-only stand with no height, swivel or pivot adjustment.
  • No USB ports or extra connectivity beyond DP 1.2, two HDMI 1.4 and a 3.5 mm jack.
  • Built-in speakers are weak (2 W each).
  • Default color accuracy is poor (deltaE average 4.12); calibration is recommended.
  • 165 Hz requires DisplayPort; over HDMI the monitor behaves as a 144 Hz display.

Motion handling and response time

The MonitorNerds review found slow pixel response with visible black trailing in fast-paced scenes, worse in dark scenes with quick motion. Overdrive’s five levels and ELMB did not resolve it; the fourth overdrive level gave the best result. FreeSync works and the monitor is G-Sync compatible, with 5 ms input lag at 165 Hz. Buyers should not expect E-Sports-grade motion clarity from this panel. A Tom’s Hardware deal article and its forum comments repeat this caution.

Color accuracy and image quality

The VA panel delivers deep blacks and high contrast. MonitorNerds measured 421 cd/m² peak brightness and 4255:1 contrast at 50% brightness, with 98% sRGB and 91% DCI-P3 coverage and good uniformity, with no significant backlight bleed at the edges. Default color accuracy was poor (deltaE average 4.12) but improved to 1.44 after calibration. The manufacturer claims 130% sRGB and 95% DCI-P3, which are different metrics from the measured figures; both are worth keeping in mind.

Ergonomics and connectivity

The stand offers only tilt (+23° to -5°) with no height, swivel or pivot, and it wobbles slightly. VESA 100 × 100 mm mounting is supported, so an arm is an option if height adjustment matters. Connectivity is limited to DisplayPort 1.2, two HDMI 1.4 ports and a 3.5 mm jack, with no USB ports. The 2 W speakers are not suitable for gaming or movies.

Is it worth it?

At about $99 the VG247Q1A is a reasonable budget 1080p high-refresh VA monitor: 165 Hz over DisplayPort, FreeSync Premium plus G-Sync compatibility, ELMB, a wide gamut, high contrast, VESA mounting and included cables. At about $120 to $130 it is fair; compare against other 1080p 144 to 165 Hz panels and weigh the response-time weakness. Near $159 the motion-handling flaw and lack of height adjustment are harder to justify, and better-tested alternatives exist. The 165 Hz headline is conditional on DisplayPort and a capable GPU; buyers planning to use HDMI should treat it as a 144 Hz monitor. Tom’s Hardware forum commenters described it as good value near $100 for budget FPS gamers prioritizing frame rate over image quality.

Which model this is

This page covers the ASUS TUF Gaming VG247Q1A, a 23.8-inch Full HD VA gaming monitor in the TUF Gaming lineup. The Amazon listing for it is ASIN B0997NRZ3F. Do not confuse it with the IPS siblings VG249Q, VG249Q1A, VG249Q1R or the 27-inch VG279Q1R, which share the TUF branding but use different panels and feature sets. ASUS states three-year product security update support until 31/12/2026; the product page does not state a monitor warranty period, so verify warranty terms on the purchase page and ASUS regional terms before buying. The monitor has no HDR certification despite ELMB.
