Summary
Check your home size and wiring first: measured coverage is moderate, and the single 10G port limits real 10G wired use.
Strengths
- AiProtection security and parental controls are included, where rivals charge a monthly fee.
- The 2.4 GHz band is unusually strong (3x3, 1032 Mbps) and suits IoT-heavy homes.
- AiMesh works with older ASUS routers and can use MLO for wireless backhaul.
- Fanless, silent and cool under load, with a wall-mount kit in the box.
- Broad ASUSWRT 5.0 feature set: QoS, Traffic Analyzer, DDNS, VPN server and client, Alexa/Google/IFTTT.
Weaknesses
- One 10G port and no link aggregation, so most homes end up with a 2.5G wired path anyway.
- Range degrades faster than top-tier routers; Dong Knows measured about 1,600 ft² of real coverage.
- The mobile app buries features in dense menus; Dong Knows advises the web interface instead.
- The network is unsecured during setup until you set a password.
- Owner feedback on firmware stability is mixed, and older reviews called it unreliable.

Wired ports and the 10G question
The wired side is the RT-BE92U’s strongest suit: one 10G WAN/LAN port, a 2.5G WAN/LAN port, three 2.5G LAN ports and a USB 3.2 Gen 1 port for storage, printers or 4G/5G tethering. Dong Knows measured among the fastest sustained 2.5G speeds in its class, and the USB port pushed about 200 MB/s read and 130 MB/s write to a portable SSD.
The catch is the single 10G port. There is no link aggregation on the reviewed firmware, and no VLAN support either. ASUS’s “up to 20G of wired capacity” claim is a port sum, not a throughput figure.
If you want a true 10G wired network, budget for a separate 10G switch. Multi-WAN is a genuine strength: the 10G and 2.5G ports auto-sense WAN/LAN, any 2.5G LAN port can be a secondary WAN, and the USB port can be a third.
Range and the 6 GHz band
Dong Knows’ week-long test found close-range performance comparable to top-tier Wi-Fi 7 routers, with faster signal degradation at range: at about 40 ft (12 m) the signal fell off quicker than higher-tier hardware. Dong Knows rates central-placement coverage at roughly 1,600 ft² (135 m²); ASUS claims up to 2,750 sq ft, which is a manufacturer figure, not a measurement.
The 6 GHz band underdelivered in testing. The 5 GHz and 6 GHz radios are 2x2, mid-tier against the 4x4 radios on costlier models.
The 2.4 GHz band is the surprise. Its 3x3, 1032 Mbps radio measured 60% faster than other routers in Digital Citizen’s tests, which makes it a strong pick for IoT-heavy homes. RTINGS characterizes the RT-BE92U as “a great router for apartments and condos” with “outstanding speeds and a decent range” for smaller homes with many users doing bandwidth-intensive tasks at once.
Setup, app and firmware
TechRadar flagged a security-relevant setup detail: the ASUS Router app initially creates a network with no password until you complete setup. The app itself drew criticism for confusing layout with features buried in dense menus; Dong Knows’ guidance is to “use the web user interface (not the mobile app)” and “don’t tinker too much”.
MLO is off by default in standalone single-router configuration; it matters mainly for wireless AiMesh backhaul. One Dong Knows commenter reports a maximum of 2 simultaneous active VPN connections out of 16 profiles.
Owner chatter on firmware stability is mixed. A Hong Kong forum thread titled “RT-BE92U 災情” mentions RMA’d units being resold — a low-quality, unverifiable signal. An owner also questioned whether the Broadcom BCM6765 CPU will block future ASUSWRT Merlin support.
Is it worth it?
There is no required subscription: AiProtection security and the parental controls are included at no monthly cost. Dong Knows measured about 275 Wh per 24 h during testing — comparable to the RT-BE86U (about 280 Wh) and lower than the TP-Link Archer BE550 (about 310 Wh). The fanless design runs cool and silent.
It launched at $299.99 in December 2024. TechRadar’s March 2026 review listed $259.99 at Best Buy and $289.99 at the ASUS store, and How-To Geek’s Black Friday coverage had it at $200 at Best Buy. Dong Knows scored it 8.5/10 and called it one of the strongest sub-$300 Wi-Fi 7 routers.
At the Black Friday street price it is strong value for tri-band Wi-Fi 7 with a 10G port and free security. At $250–300 it remains reasonable if ASUSWRT features, AiMesh and the 10G port matter to you. Above $300 the value weakens, and dual-10G routers or dedicated mesh systems become the alternatives. Owners report running it alongside XD4 mini access points with no issues, and one calls it “super reliable” at a ~$200 street price.
Which model this is
This page covers the ASUS RT-BE92U, a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 router in the BE9700 speed class. ASUS’s US storefront lists the same hardware as the RT-BE9700, and Best Buy sells it under the slug “asus-rt-be92u-be9700-tri-band-wi-fi-7-router-black”. It is a new design, not a refresh of the Wi-Fi 6 RT-AX92U, and it is not the dual-band RT-BE86U or a ROG Rapture gaming router. The Amazon listing for this router is ASIN B0DHWCQ3FP.
