Summary
A Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 gaming phone that pivots toward mainstream flagship usability, with IP68, wireless charging, a telephoto camera and a 165Hz LTPO display, plus gaming-specific features like AirTriggers, dual USB-C and an AniMe Vision mini-LED back. Battery life is class-leading in tests, but the software-update promise is only two major OS updates and the US model lacks mmWave 5G, so weigh those tradeoffs before buying.
Strengths
- Class-leading battery life in independent tests (11h34m to 18h48m).
- 165Hz LTPO display with strong brightness (up to 2,500 nits peak).
- IP68 water resistance, wireless charging and a headphone jack.
- Gaming features: AirTriggers, dual USB-C, AniMe Vision panel.
- 65W wired charging refills in roughly 40–50 minutes.
Weaknesses
- Only 2 major OS updates and 4 years of security patches.
- No mmWave 5G in the US model (sub-6 only).
- Camera system still trails Samsung/Apple/Pixel flagships.
- 5,500mAh battery is smaller than the ROG Phone 7’s 6,000mAh.
- Launch price of $1,199–$1,499 is high versus gaming rivals.
- Owner-reported post-Android 16 issues: screen and camera bugs, call drops, battery degradation.

Performance and battery
Tom’s Guide measured 18h48m of web browsing (auto refresh) / 18h56m (60Hz locked), beating the Galaxy S23 Ultra (12h22m) and iPhone 15 Pro Max (14h02m), and named it best battery-life champion; display measured 1,637 nits peak, 112.4% DCI-P3, delta-E 0.31; charging reached 36% in 15 min, 71% in 30 min, full in ~50 min. PCMag (Pro Edition) measured 12h55m YouTube streaming at full brightness, Geekbench 6 2,236 single / 7,000 multi, PCMark Work 3.0 20,833, GFXBench Aztec Ruins 108fps (112fps with cooler), charging 34% in 15 min / 69% in 30 min / full in ~50 min, speakers 93.4dB max. GSMArena measured an Active Use Score of 14h43m, charging 46% in 15 min / 80% in 30 min / full in 42 min, display 831 nits manual / 1,765 nits auto, Widevine L1. Tech Advisor measured 11h34m battery and flagged only two OS updates. UL Benchmarks aggregated 3DMark Solar Bay 8,671 (90% stability), PCMark Work 3.0 11h07m, internal sequential read ~3,104 MB/s.
Cameras and software
The 32MP telephoto outputs 8MP final photos (pixel binning), and the 32MP front camera outputs 8MP. AirTriggers were downgraded from ultrasonic (ROG Phone 7) to pressure-sensitive; swipe and rest-detection gestures are gone. Speakers are no longer symmetrical dual front-facing drivers; a bottom-firing plus front-firing pair with a single DAC is less loud than the ROG Phone 7. Battery-care features include custom charging limit, steady/ultra-steady charging, scheduled charging and bypass charging.
Is it worth it?
Launch MSRP was $1,199 (16GB/512GB) and $1,499 (24GB/1TB). Mobile Advance (US retailer, checked 2026-10) listed the 16GB/512GB at $999.99 (was $1,199.99) and the 24GB/1TB at $1,499.99, both out of stock. A deal aggregator showed a 24GB/1TB listing at $589.79, though that figure should be treated cautiously. The optional AeroActive Cooler X costs $99 if not bundled. At $800 or less it is strong value for a gaming-focused buyer; $800–$1,000 is good value; $1,000–$1,200 is fair; $1,200–$1,500 is weak for most buyers. The value case rests on battery life, gaming performance and the 165Hz display, not on camera or update support.
Which model this is
This page covers the ASUS ROG Phone 8 Pro (AI2401), Phantom Black, the 2024 gaming flagship with a 3x telephoto and AniMe Vision. It is not the vanilla ROG Phone 8 (12/16GB, 256GB, RGB logo instead of AniMe Vision, macro camera instead of telephoto) and not the higher-tier ROG Phone 8 Pro Edition (24GB/1TB, bundles the AeroActive Cooler X). The Amazon listing used as the identity seed is ASIN B0CT2P1JM4.
