ASUS ROG Phone 8 Pro: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-17
Summary
A Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 gaming phone that moved toward mainstream flagship usability, with IP68 water resistance, wireless charging, a 3x telephoto camera and a bright 165Hz LTPO display. The only running cost is the optional AeroActive Cooler X; there are no subscriptions.
Common problems and fixes
- Post-Android 16 bugs and battery degradation — owners report screen problems, camera and flashlight bugs, T-Mobile call drops and battery degradation within 6 months after the Android 16 update; the fix is to wait for a follow-up firmware update, and the latest checked firmware (WW-36.0210.1420.48, 2026-07-01) only raised the security patch to 2026-05-01. [10][15]
- No mmWave 5G in the US model — the US version is sub-6 only, which matters for Verizon and AT&T users in mmWave-covered areas; there is no fix, so check your carrier bands before buying. [6]
- AirTrigger downgrade — this generation uses pressure-sensitive triggers instead of the ultrasonic ones in the ROG Phone 7, and swipe and rest-detection gestures are gone; there is no way to restore them. [9]
- Speaker downgrade — the speaker system is now a bottom-firing plus front-firing pair with a single DAC and is less loud than the ROG Phone 7; use the 3.5mm headphone jack for better audio. [9][12]
- Smaller battery than its predecessor — the 5,500mAh cell is smaller than the ROG Phone 7’s 6,000mAh because of the slimmer sealed design; battery-care features (custom charging limit, steady charging, scheduled charging, bypass charging) help slow degradation. [5][8][11]
Parts and consumables
- AeroActive Cooler X — optional clip-on cooler at $99 if not bundled (the 24GB/1TB Pro Edition bundles it); PCMag measured 112fps in GFXBench Aztec Ruins with it versus 108fps without. [6]
Yearly running cost
The only recurring cost reported is the optional AeroActive Cooler X at $99 (PCMag, 2024-01) when it is not bundled, and there is no subscription lock-in. No electricity, filter or consumable figure is published, so a full yearly figure cannot be computed. [6]
When it is a good buy
Mobile Advance (US retailer, checked 2026-10) listed the 16GB/512GB at $999.99 (was $1,199.99) and the 24GB/1TB at $1,499.99, both out of stock. Launch MSRP was $1,199 (16GB/512GB) and $1,499 (24GB/1TB). A GSMArena deal aggregator showed a 24GB/1TB listing at $589.79, though that figure should be treated cautiously. At $800 or less it is strong value for a gaming-focused buyer, $800-$1,000 is good value, $1,000-$1,200 is fair, and $1,200-$1,500 is weak for most buyers. The value case rests on battery life, gaming performance and the 165Hz display, not on camera or update support.
