Summary
Check your bag before you buy: at 7.0–7.5 lb it is too big for most laptop bags, and the 18-inch chassis does not make it faster than 16-inch competitors with identical specs.
Strengths
- Strong multi-threaded CPU performance from the 24-core Core Ultra 9 275HX.
- Tool-less bottom panel makes RAM and SSD upgrades genuinely easy.
- Tri-fan vapor-chamber cooling keeps the laptop near room temperature under load.
- Best-in-class trackpad and comfortable keyboard for a gaming laptop.
- Bright 240Hz 2.5K display eliminates the need for a second monitor.
Weaknesses
- Bulky and heavy; Laptop Mag says it is too big to fit in most laptop bags.
- Noticeable fan noise under load; XDA says it gets loud.
- Display color gamut falls well short of ASUS’s 100% DCI-P3 claim.
- Plastic chassis does not feel premium for the cost.
- 18-inch size does not provide a performance advantage over 16-inch competitors.
- Base config ships with only 16GB RAM.

Performance and value
Independent reviews converge on strong CPU and GPU performance. Laptop Mag measured Geekbench 6 multi-core at 19,899 and 3DMark Fire Strike Ultra at 13,074, with gaming frame rates of 154 fps in Assassin’s Creed Mirage and 59.8 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p. XDA recorded 3DMark Time Spy at 21,188 and Cyberpunk 2077 at 90.8 fps with native 1600p resolution. PCMag found processing benchmarks tightly clustered with competitors. The ASUS 16GB/2TB RTX 5080 configuration was priced at about $2,500 at review time, undercutting the MSI Raider 18 HX AI (about $4,499), Alienware 18 Area-51 (about $3,100+), and Razer Blade 18 ($4,000 or more). At Best Buy the review config cost about $3,060–$3,300, which PCMag called roughly in line with similar-spec alternatives in a plastic shell.
Display and build
The 18-inch 2560×1600 IPS panel runs at 240Hz with a 3ms response time. Laptop Mag measured 511.8 nits brightness, 110.2% sRGB and 78.0% DCI-P3, against ASUS’s claim of 100% DCI-P3. XDA measured about 480 nits and a color error of 0.91. It is a standard IPS panel without local dimming, behind the mini-LED and OLED panels in more expensive 18-inch laptops. The plastic chassis with a metal lid does not feel premium for the price, and XDA notes visible screen flex under pressure. The Copilot key replaces the right Control key, which may annoy some users.
Battery and thermals
Battery life is above average for an 18-inch gaming laptop but still far from all-day. Laptop Mag’s non-gaming test ran 7 hours 45 minutes, and gaming lasted 1 hour 34 minutes. XDA reports light web browsing dying in a little under four hours. PCMag’s video playback test measured 6 hours 17 minutes. The tri-fan vapor-chamber cooling keeps thermals under control, with Conductonaut liquid metal on the CPU, though fans get loud under sustained load. Liquid metal may complicate user servicing, and ASUS blocks off components with plastic under the tool-less panel.
Upgrades and daily use
The tool-less bottom panel lets you swap RAM and SSD without unscrewing the chassis, which XDA calls a practical advantage rarely seen in this class. The two SO-DIMM slots support up to 64GB, and there are two M.2 slots for storage. The port selection includes Thunderbolt 5, 2.5G Ethernet and HDMI 2.1 FRL, covering most desktop-replacement needs. The 1080p webcam with Windows Hello IR works but produces grainy, blurry image quality. The included power brick weighs about 2.5 lb, adding to the carry weight.
Is it worth it?
At $2,499.99 direct from ASUS for a 16GB/2TB config it undercuts the broader 18-inch RTX 5080 market significantly and is strong value. Between $2,501 and $3,000 it remains competitive against 16-inch and 18-inch alternatives with identical specs. Above $3,000 the value narrows: the plastic build and middling display become harder to justify, and premium 18-inch alternatives with mini-LED or OLED displays become accessible. The 18-inch form factor and tool-less upgradeability are the primary differentiators, not superior performance or display quality. The G18 makes the most sense for buyers who specifically want a large-screen desktop replacement at the lowest possible price.
