Summary
Check the subscription before you buy — without a paid Arlo Secure plan it is live view only, with no recordings and no smart alerts.
Strengths
- Sharp 1080p video with excellent color, and accurate, fast motion alerts (PCMag).
- The privacy shield physically covers the lens whenever the camera is disarmed.
- Wired power means no batteries, and the round base stands on a table or mounts to a wall.
- Setup is quick: hold the pairing button for three seconds and follow the app.
- Two-way audio is full-duplex with noise cancellation, and the siren fires from the app or on motion.
Weaknesses
- Without a paid Arlo Secure plan the camera is live view only: no recordings, no smart alerts, no activity zones.
- A 2026 firmware release caused some units to drop offline roughly every 24 hours until Arlo rolled it back.
- No local storage on the camera; local recording needs an optional SmartHub with USB storage.
- No color night vision, no spotlight, no HomeKit, and no weatherproofing — indoor use only.
- 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, and some owners cannot get the camera to join mesh networks.
- Arlo’s own materials do not state the warranty terms for this model.

Video, audio and the privacy shield
Motion alerts were accurate and fast, the privacy shield worked as intended, and Alexa voice commands reacted instantly. Setup is quick: hold the pairing button for three seconds, wait for the blue LED, and let the firmware update finish. The Best Buy Blog review was more mixed on image quality — “despite not having the best image quality” — while praising the compact stand, easy installation and the full Arlo app feature set. Two-way audio is full-duplex with noise cancellation, and the integrated siren can trigger on motion or sound or from the app.
Subscription and running costs
Without a paid Arlo Secure plan the camera is live view only: no cloud recordings, no person, pet, vehicle or package detection, no activity zones. Owners confirm that once the included trial ends, event recordings stop, and the 7-day free cloud some expected does not exist for this line. One Reddit owner concluded the cameras are “essentially useless junk” without a subscription. Arlo Secure is $4.99 a month for a single camera with 30-day history, intelligent detection, activity zones and interactive notifications; $12.99 a month covers unlimited cameras; $17.99 a month adds 24/7 emergency response. There is no local storage on the camera itself — local recording requires an optional SmartHub or base station with USB storage. Arlo’s docs list VMB4000, VMB4500, VMB4540 and VMB5000 compatibility, though one Reddit owner claims the cameras are “not compatible with any of their hubs or base stations” — that may reflect the no-subscription limitation rather than physical incompatibility.
Offline problems and firmware
The strongest exact-model signal is a 2026 firmware problem. In an Arlo Community thread started in June 2026, multiple owners reported Essential Indoor 2nd-gen cameras going offline roughly every 24 hours despite being permanently plugged in — one sitting next to the router — and needing a power cycle, while other Arlo devices in the same homes were unaffected. An Arlo moderator confirmed that a recent firmware release caused intermittent offline behavior in a small number of users and that a firmware rollback was being applied; affected owners were advised to keep cameras online to receive it. Whether every affected unit is back online after the rollback is unknown. One Reddit owner reported a whole Arlo system “bricked” after an update and switched to Ring — a single anecdote, not a failure rate. Nobody has published a failure rate for this model.
Is it worth it?
Value depends heavily on price. Arlo launched the camera at $39.99 in December 2023, with the 2K variant at $79.99 and the first generation at $99.99. By PCMag’s review in March 2024 the MSRP was $29.99, with street prices of $24 at Best Buy and $36 at Walmart. A Reddit owner paid $19.99 each at Walmart in 2025. At under $25 it is a capable budget indoor camera for the Arlo ecosystem, with the offline issue and the subscription dependence as tradeoffs. From $26 to $35 it is fair, and the effectively mandatory subscription pushes the first-year cost toward $85-100. At $36-45 it is weak: at its own launch price PCMag preferred the TP-Link Tapo C120, which adds 2K video, color night vision, local storage and weatherproofing. Above $45 no exact-model advantage justifies it. Arlo has discontinued this model on its own site — the third-generation Essential Indoor is the listed replacement — though firmware updates remain active.
Which model this is
This page covers the Arlo Essential Indoor Camera (2nd Generation), the wired indoor model launched in September 2023. Do not confuse it with the first-generation Essential Indoor (VMC2040, 2021), the 2025 Essential Pan/Tilt Indoor, or the third-generation Essential Indoor that Arlo now lists as the replacement.
