Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A budget 1080p indoor security camera with a 130° field of view, 12x digital zoom, an automated privacy shield that physically covers the lens when disarmed, and no hub required. The one thing to check before buying is the subscription: recordings require an Arlo Secure plan, and without one you get live view and limited motion detection only.

Strengths

  • The automated privacy shield physically covers the lens on disarm and disables motion and audio detection, unlike software-only privacy switches.
  • The 130° field of view catches a whole room, and the included wall-mount hardware plus a tilting round base give flexible placement.
  • No hub required for live view; it connects straight to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
  • Inexpensive way to add a camera to an existing Arlo system, and firmware support remains active after Arlo discontinued direct sales.

Weaknesses

  • Recordings require an Arlo Secure subscription; without a plan there is no saved video, only live view and limited motion detection.
  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, which complicates mesh setups and thick-wall homes.
  • No local storage of any kind on the camera; the only offline route is a separate compatible SmartHub with USB storage.
  • The plastic body feels cheap to some owners, and the thin mounting arm is finicky to angle.
  • Owners report units bricking during firmware updates and a firmware-driven offline regression in 2026 that required unplugging and replugging.

Privacy shield and app

The shield is the camera’s main differentiator. It is an electromechanical cover that opens while monitoring and closes whenever you disarm in the Arlo Secure app; while closed it disables motion and audio detection and turns the microphone off. Arlo warns not to push it shut with a finger, and with 24/7 Recording enabled it must remain open. The shutter motor makes an audible clicking and whirring when it transitions; one owner found it disruptive near a sleeping child. The camera runs only in the Arlo Secure app on Android or iOS, with selectable stream resolution, activity zones and object detection for people, animals and vehicles. Arming modes are Arm Away, Arm Home and Standby, with a location-aware geofenced mode available.

Subscription and running costs

The ongoing cost is the subscription. Arlo’s US Secure plan page offers a single-camera basic plan at $9.99 per month, or $95.88 per year prepaid (equivalent to $7.99 per month); month-to-month it is $119.88 per year. An unlimited-camera plan starts at $19.99 per month or $215.88 per year. Three years of the single-camera annual plan is $287.64, and three years month-to-month is $359.64. These are the dominant ownership cost and far exceed the camera body. A free trial comes with the camera; after it ends, without a plan you keep live view, push notifications and two-way talk but no standard cloud video history or activity zones. Electricity is minor: at an assumed 3 W constant draw that is about 26.28 kWh per year, roughly $5.26 at an assumed $0.20 per kWh, and at 6 W it doubles to about 52.56 kWh and $10.51 per year, but these are illustrative figures, not device measurements.

Wi-Fi, firmware and reliability

The camera needs a reliable 2.4 GHz signal; on a busy channel or through thick walls, practical reliability depends on signal quality. In mid-2024 owners described the 2nd-gen Essential Indoor going offline repeatedly after an update. An Arlo Community thread begun June 28, 2026 described the same pattern on multiple units, and on July 22, 2026 an Arlo moderator said a recent firmware release caused intermittent offline behavior for a limited set of users, with temporary rollback as mitigation. On September 17, 2026 the moderator announced firmware 10.1.7_23ee515 as the permanent fix. Ask a seller whether a used or clearance device updates, and verify firmware after setup. Other owner signals include a live-view spinner despite good Wi-Fi, night mode stuck on black-and-white until a restart, and occasional feed or zoom load failures requiring an app restart. No model-specific failure rate or average lifespan has been published.

Is it worth it?

Between $31 and $40 it is fair value; PCMag, reviewing the camera at a $39.99 list price, advises buying the identically priced TP-Link Tapo C120 instead, which adds 2K video, color night vision and local storage. Above $40 the 2K sibling or other brands’ local-storage cameras make more sense. If you need local recording without a subscription, the Tapo C120’s microSD slot up to 512 GB is the practical route; if you need Arlo integration or the motorized shutter, this camera is the reason to stay. The current 3rd-gen Essential Indoor 2K is listed by Arlo at $29.99 with dual-band Wi-Fi and color night vision, so compare it before buying the older model.
