Summary

Apple’s 2023 flagship smartwatch in 41mm and 45mm aluminum or stainless steel, with the S9 chip, a 2000-nit always-on display, the Double Tap gesture and a full health sensor stack. Check two things before buying: US units sold from January 2024 lost the Blood Oxygen app, and battery health on used units is the main risk.

Strengths

  • The S9 chip makes Siri and app switching noticeably faster than the Series 8.
  • The 2000-nit display is easy to read in direct sunlight.
  • Double Tap is genuinely handy when your hands are full, though it is not essential.
  • Fast charging refills most of the battery in under an hour.
  • A full health stack: ECG, wrist temperature, sleep apnea notifications and the Vitals app.
  • It continues to run watchOS 27 and receives Siri AI features with a compatible iPhone.

Weaknesses

  • The 18-hour battery claim is unchanged from the Series 8, and heavy GPS use drains it well below a day.
  • US units sold from January 2024 have no Blood Oxygen app after the Masimo patent dispute.
  • Double Tap does not work in Low Power Mode, during Sleep Focus, or when the watch is locked.
  • Battery health on used units is a common problem, with owners reporting 83-91% capacity after about a year.
  • An out-of-warranty battery service costs $99, and a cracked screen means a whole-unit replacement near $300.
  • The hardware changes over the Series 8 are minor.

Battery life and charging

Apple’s 18-hour figure assumes 90 time checks, 90 notifications, 45 minutes of app use and a 60-minute workout. Owner measurements spread widely: a launch thread reported 54% left after 21 hours including sleep wear, and a 2026 owner reported routinely reaching 36 hours on the GPS version with Low Power Mode. Heavy always-on and GPS use drains faster, with owners reporting roughly 2-4% per hour and a 2026 comparison measuring about 4.2% an hour on a Series 9 against 2.6% on a Series 12. Apple designs the battery to hold 80% of capacity at 1000 charge cycles.

The US blood oxygen caveat

After the Masimo patent dispute, Apple removed the Blood Oxygen app from new Series 9 and Ultra 2 units sold in the US from January 2024, even though Apple’s current spec page still lists the feature. Availability therefore depends on the manufacture date and software of the individual unit, and it is the most commonly misunderstood point for US buyers. Double Tap is a separate caveat: it shipped a month after launch with watchOS 10.1 and turns off in Low Power Mode, during Sleep Focus, when the watch is locked, and with certain accessibility gestures enabled.

Repairs and running costs

Apple does not repair Series 9 screens; it replaces the whole unit. Out-of-warranty battery service is $99, raised from $79 in September 2023, and community reports put screen replacement around $300 out of warranty against about $400 for a new watch. iFixit sells replacement screens at $206.99 (45mm) and $217.99 (41mm) and warns that a DIY swap can disable Apple Pay. AppleCare+ covers up to two accidental-damage incidents a year with a service fee, and subscribers get free battery replacement below 80% capacity. There is no subscription for the core health features.

Is it worth it?

Launch prices were $399 for the 41mm GPS, $429 for the 45mm GPS, and $499 or $529 for cellular. Best Buy ran the Series 9 down to $299 for the 41mm GPS in early 2024, and the watch was discontinued later that year. Stock is now mostly Geek Squad Certified Refurbished or open-box, with 41mm GPS examples observed around $209.99-$259.99 and 41mm GPS + Cellular around $383. At $250 or less it is a solid buy for an iPhone owner who wants the full health stack and current watchOS support, provided you check battery health; above $330 the newer generations make more sense. Budget for the $99 battery service or a $300 damage fee, since those can erase the discount.

Which model this is

This page covers the Apple Watch Series 9 in 41mm and 45mm, the 2023 update to the Series 8. The external design, health sensors and battery claim are essentially unchanged; the upgrades are the S9 SiP, the Double Tap gesture, the 2000-nit display and the second-generation Ultra Wideband chip. It is not the Series 8, the Series 10 or later, or the SE line, which drops the always-on display and the ECG, blood-oxygen and temperature sensors.
