Apple 11-inch iPad Pro (M5): problems, parts and running costs

Checked: 2026-10-08

Summary

There are no consumables and no required subscription — electricity works out to roughly $1.84 a year by a hypothetical calculation — so the real cost is the tablet plus accessories: keyboard and pencil add $428. It launched at $999 in October 2025; B&H listed the 256GB at $1,199 in October 2026, and at that price the 11-inch Air M4 from $699 is the alternative to beat.

Parts and consumables

Yearly running cost

Charging electricity works out to roughly $1.84 a year by a hypothetical calculation, not a meter test: 250 full charges a year × 31.29Wh at 85% wall-to-battery efficiency and $0.20/kWh is about 9.20 kWh. There are no consumables and no mandatory subscription on the Wi-Fi model. The main elective cost is accessories: the tablet at $1,199 (B&H, October 2026) plus Pencil Pro $129 plus keyboard $299 comes to $1,627 before tax, and adding the optional fast charger makes $1,666. Apple’s self-service and mail-in repair routes exist, but no price was published for this exact model. [1] [2] [15] [16] [17] [12]

When it is a good buy

The 11-inch iPad Pro M5 launched in October 2025 at $999 [4] [6]. In October 2026 B&H listed the Space Black 256GB (MDWK4LL/A) at $1,199 in stock, and the Silver at the same $1,199 but out of stock until October 13, 2026 [2] [3]. The research draws the value line at $999 or less for anyone who will use tandem OLED, Pencil Pro and M5-class editing; $1,000-1,099 is acceptable for a professional who can use those features; $1,100-1,199 needs stronger justification; above $1,200, compare the Air M4 or a desktop-class computer if a keyboard and full applications are the real priority [2] [15] [16] [18].
