Summary
A fanless 13-inch ultraportable with the M5 chip, 16GB of memory and a 512GB SSD, built for silent days and long battery life. Check the ports and the 60Hz display before you buy: two USB-C ports and no high refresh rate are the price of the thin, quiet design.
Strengths
- Battery life is the headline: PCMag measured 18 hours 4 minutes of video playback, and The Guardian got more than 17 hours of office work.
- The fanless aluminum chassis is silent in everyday use and feels exceptionally well built.
- The M5 chip chews through everyday work, and the SSD is roughly twice as fast as the M4 model’s.
- The 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display is sharp, bright and color-accurate, with exceptional factory calibration.
- The 1080p Center Stage webcam and large haptic trackpad draw consistent praise across professional reviews.
Weaknesses
- The display is fixed at 60Hz with no variable refresh rate, and blacks look gray in a dim room.
- Two USB-C ports and a headphone jack are all you get — no USB-A, HDMI or SD card slot.
- RAM and storage are not user-replaceable, memory caps at 32GB, and upgrades after purchase are expensive.
- Sustained workloads trigger thermal throttling; owners report the laptop getting “burning hot even on idle.”
- The integrated 8-core GPU isn’t suited to demanding 3D work, and modern games run poorly.
- The price rose from $1,099 at launch to $1,299 in June 2026 after a memory and storage cost increase.

Performance and thermals
The M5 chip handles web browsing, documents, spreadsheets, presentations, programming and light content creation with ease, and RTINGS measured excellent single-thread CPU performance. Tom’s Guide measured a Geekbench 6 multi-core score of 17,276, up from 14,921 on the M4, with SSD read/write speeds around 6,500/6,700 MB/s — roughly twice as fast as the M4 model. The Guardian measured the M5 at 10–20% faster than the M4 and 75–108% faster than the M1 depending on task, beating the 2021 M1 Pro MacBook Pro in all of its metrics.
The fanless design is silent in everyday use, but it cannot sustain peak performance. RTINGS notes thermal throttling during sustained workloads, and owners describe the laptop getting “burning hot even on idle,” throttling after 30–50 minutes of music production with audio cracking, and throttling 5–6 minutes into gaming sessions. In r/macbookair threads, owners suggest thermal pad mods costing about $5 can increase cooling capacity by 40–50%. The integrated 8-core GPU isn’t suited to demanding professional 3D work, and demanding games run poorly.
Battery life and charging
Apple rates the 53.8 Wh battery at up to 18 hours of video streaming and 15 hours of wireless web. Real-world tests land lower but still strong: PCMag measured 18 hours 4 minutes of video playback, The Guardian routinely got more than 17 hours of office work (browsing, notes, documents, chat, email, photo editing) and about 10 hours of video editing, Consumer Reports measured 15 hours of light web browsing and 13.5 hours of 4K video playback, and RTINGS got over 13 hours of both web browsing and video playback. The spread reflects different test methods rather than a defect.
Fast charging works with a 70W or higher USB PD source: The Guardian measured 50% in 26 minutes and a full charge in just over 100 minutes. One owner in r/macbookair reports the battery draining from 80% to 50% during 3 hours of web browsing — a single report, not a measured norm.
Display, keyboard and ports
The 13.6-inch Liquid Retina panel is sharp, bright and accurate, with a fantastic color gamut and exceptional factory calibration; it gets bright enough for most settings and handles reflections remarkably well. The weaknesses are contrast and refresh: blacks look gray in a dim room, and the panel is fixed at 60Hz with no variable refresh rate, which RTINGS says causes visible ghosting and screen tearing in games. PCMag notes there is no OLED option.
Input devices are a high point: the keyboard is tactile and good to type on, and the large haptic trackpad tracks movements and gestures exceptionally well. Ports are the bigger compromise — two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, MagSafe 3 and a 3.5mm jack, with no USB-A, HDMI or SD card slot. RAM and storage are not user-replaceable and memory caps at 32GB; The Guardian notes upgrades are expensive and cannot be changed after purchase.
Is it worth it?
Apple’s official pricing for the 13-inch model started at $1,099 at launch in March 2026; PCMag reported an increase to $1,299 in June 2026, citing memory and storage cost increases. Tom’s Guide called the $100 increase over the M4 model a downside, and the upgrades over the M4 are nominal — same design, same 60Hz display. Apple’s MacBook Neo now sits below the Air as the budget option at roughly half the price.
Running costs are modest but real: expect to buy a USB-C hub or dock if you need more ports, external storage if 512GB isn’t enough, and AppleCare+ if you want coverage beyond the one-year limited warranty. The battery should last in excess of 1,000 full-charge cycles at 80% capacity, and Apple offers battery replacement. For most people who want a silent, all-day laptop for office work, study and media, the M5 Air does the job; if you need sustained performance, more ports or gaming, look at the MacBook Pro line.
