Summary
Apple’s compact 6.3-inch Pro phone with the 2 nm A20 Pro chip, triple 48 MP cameras including a variable-aperture main lens, and Apple-rated 24-hour battery life. Check the $100 price increase and the eSIM-only US units before you buy.
Strengths
- A20 Pro posts large benchmark gains over the prior generation (Geekbench 6: 4,787 single-core, 12,166 multi-core).
- Variable aperture on the 48 MP main lens gives real manual control over depth of field.
- The 6.3-inch size stays hand-friendly while keeping Pro features and a 3,000-nit display.
- The Dynamic Island is about 25% smaller than the prior generation’s.
Weaknesses
- Base price rose $100 to $1,199 for 256 GB over the prior generation.
- The phone runs noticeably warm without a case under sustained processor load.
- Weight increased to 7.44 oz from the predecessor’s 7.27 oz.
- Variable aperture matters most to photography-focused users, not everyone.
- US units are eSIM-only, with no physical SIM tray.
- No standardized lab test of this model was found.

Performance and battery
Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro for up to 24 hours of typical use, 36 hours of video playback and 33 hours of streamed video playback. Apple does not publish battery capacity in mAh. PCMag reported more than two days of battery life in use, plus Geekbench 6 scores of 4,787 single-core and 12,166 multi-core against the iPhone 17 Pro’s 3,820 and 9,820, and AnTuTu 3,544,646. MacRumors reported Geekbench 7 scores of 4,027 single-core and 11,540 multi-core, a 24% and 26% gain over the iPhone 17 Pro, and no overheating during 4K 60 fps recording in heat. PCMag also noted the phone gets noticeably warm without a case under heavy processor load. The A20 Pro uses 2 nm silicon with side-by-side memory packaging that attaches directly to the vapor chamber, which MacRumors and 9to5Mac describe as three times larger than the iPhone 17 Pro’s; PCMag describes it as twice the size. The two figures likely reflect different metrics. An unresolved conflict also remains over modems: PCMag states US iPhone 18 Pro units use a Qualcomm Snapdragon modem while the Pro Max uses Apple’s C2, whereas MacRumors states the iPhone 18 Pro uses Apple C2 worldwide and the Pro Max uses Qualcomm only in the US.
Camera
The rear system is three 48 MP Fusion cameras. The main lens has a variable aperture with six physical laser-cut blades at f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0, 24 mm, with second-generation sensor-shift OIS. The Ultra Wide is 13 mm at f/2.2 with a 120-degree field of view; the Telephoto is 100 mm (4×) at f/2.8 with a tetraprism design, plus optical-quality 8× (200 mm) and digital zoom to 40×. The front camera is 18 MP Center Stage at f/1.9 with a square sensor that enables wide-angle modes. Video runs 4K Dolby Vision up to 120 fps on the main camera, with Cinematic mode up to 4K 60 fps, ProRes and ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2, Genlock, spatial video at 1080p 30 fps and Action mode up to 2.8K 60 fps. MacRumors found variable-aperture sharpness peaking at f/2.8, then f/1.8, f/4.0 and f/1.48. 9to5Mac cited a night scene at 10,000 versus 12,500 ISO at 1/15 s.
Charging, durability and repair
Fast charging reaches about 50% in 15 minutes with a 60 W-capable adapter or higher, or 50% in 30 minutes with a 35 W adapter and a MagSafe Charger; wireless charging runs up to 25 W through MagSafe or Qi2. PCMag measured 49% in 15 minutes using a 45 W charger, with the charger dropping to 21 W and a full charge in 64 minutes. Apple tested with its 40 W Dynamic Power Adapter (A3351); no power adapter is included in the box, only a 1 m USB-C cable. The phone is IP68 rated to 6 m for 30 minutes under IEC 60529, with splash, water and dust resistance that Apple states is not permanent. Liquid damage is not covered under warranty, and Apple’s spec sheet does not list a warranty length. The enclosure is aluminum with Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield on the back; Apple reports 40% recycled content overall, including 85% recycled aluminum in the enclosure, 100% recycled cobalt and 95% recycled lithium in the battery, 80% recycled steel in multiple components and 100% recycled rare earth elements in all magnets. US units are eSIM-only, with dual eSIM and eight or more eSIMs stored.
Is it worth it?
At $1,199 for 256 GB, the iPhone 18 Pro is a premium compact flagship whose value rests on the A20 Pro, battery life, variable-aperture camera and manual controls rather than on price. The $100 increase over the prior generation narrows the value gap versus keeping an iPhone 17 Pro or buying a standard iPhone 17. Buyers prioritizing photography and one-handed comfort are the best fit; buyers wanting maximum battery and screen should weigh the Pro Max at $1,299. Apple lists the 6.9-inch 256 GB model at $1,299, with 512 GB at $1,399 or $1,499, 1 TB at $1,799 or $1,899 and 2 TB at $2,399 or $2,499. Apple’s shop page lists carrier deals with trade-in credits up to $1,200 (AT&T), $1,000 (T-Mobile) and $840 (Verizon). Ownership costs beyond purchase include cases, a charger since no adapter is included, AppleCare+ (not priced in the fetched sources) and storage-tier premiums.
