Summary
The compact titanium flagship of Apple’s 2023 Pro line, for buyers who want a small one-hand phone with Pro cameras and USB-C. It is discontinued at Apple, so check the battery health of any used or refurbished unit before you buy.
Strengths
- Titanium cuts the weight to 187 g from the iPhone 14 Pro’s 206 g, and long-term owners call the lightness the real upgrade.
- The 48MP main camera defaults to 24MP output, and owners report more natural color and less oversharpening than the 14 Pro.
- Performance has headroom to spare: PCMag measured Geekbench 6 at 2,936 single-core and 7,399 multi-core.
- USB-C arrives at full USB 3 speed — up to 10Gb/s, with ProRes recording to external SSDs.
- Software support runs to at least 2028, and iOS 17.4 exposes battery cycle count in Settings.
Weaknesses
- Battery life trails the lineup: Tom’s Guide’s 5G web-surfing test put it at 10:53, behind even the non-Pro iPhone 15 Plus at 14:14.
- Charging is still 20W-class wired — PCMag measured 85 minutes to full — and no adapter is in the box.
- The base 128GB tier is tight for a phone that shoots 48MP ProRAW photos and ProRes video.
- The included USB-C cable does not carry USB 3 speeds, so fast transfers and external ProRes need a separate cable.
- The smaller Pro keeps the 3x telephoto; the 5x tetraprism lens is Pro Max only.
- Launch overheating (surface temperatures above 100°F) was fixed in iOS 17.0.3, but owners still report warmth during fast charging and gaming.

Battery life and charging
Apple claims up to 23 hours of video playback and 20 hours of streamed video. PCMag’s test — HD YouTube streaming over Wi-Fi at maximum brightness — drained the phone in 16 hours 45 minutes, 45 minutes better than the 14 Pro but third of the four iPhone 15 models, and well behind the Pro Max’s 20h15m. Tom’s Guide’s continuous 5G web-surfing ranking is harsher: 10:53 for the 15 Pro, against 14:02 for the Pro Max, 14:14 for the iPhone 15 Plus and 11:05 for the standard iPhone 15. A six-month owner logged 6-7 hours of screen-on time with about 30% left at 8 p.m.; heavy dashcam, Bluetooth and camera days ran down to 50% by 3 p.m.
Charging has not improved over the previous generation: still 20W-class wired charging while competitors ship 45-80W. PCMag measured 0-50% in 32 minutes and a full charge in 85 minutes, with about two hours for a full wireless charge, and the box includes no adapter. Capping the display at 60Hz buys only about 5% more battery life, Macworld’s ProMotion experiment found.
Overheating: launch-window bug, now fixed
In September 2023, owners reported surface temperatures above 100°F. One owner in WSJ’s testing hit 112°F while charging during processor-intensive tasks, and an analyst cited in Reddit posts put peak temperatures around 115°F, blaming the thermal design rather than the A17 Pro chip. Apple acknowledged the problem on September 30, attributed it to an iOS 17 bug, and shipped the fix in iOS 17.0.3 on October 4, 2023. A six-month owner said the overheating subsided after about a week, though the phone still gets occasionally warm during fast charging or gaming, and got warm in about 90°F ambient weather without heavy load. These are owner reports, not controlled lab measurements, and the same threads contain owners reporting zero heating issues.
Repairs, battery service and running costs
The battery is the main consumable. Apple revised its lifespan estimate upward in February 2024 — 80% capacity after 1,000 full charge cycles, up from 500 — after retesting the iPhone 15 line, and iOS 17.4 now shows cycle count and manufacture date in Battery Health. One owner reported 100% capacity at 177 cycles after six months; another reported 96% after roughly a year. In r/iPhone15Pro, owners argue the phone could easily last until the iPhone 20, and one thread concluded you can probably get 7-8 years of solid use.
Repairs are not user-serviceable. CNET’s coverage of Apple’s repair pricing lists back glass replacement at $169 for the 15 Pro, versus $199 for the Pro Max. The included cable cannot do USB 3 data transfer, and Apple’s own Thunderbolt 4 3m cable was listed at $159. A 20W+ USB-C charger must be bought separately, and PCMag recommends a case. No subscription costs attach to the hardware itself.
Is it worth it?
The phone is discontinued at Apple as of September 9, 2024, so a 2026 buyer is choosing a discounted previous-generation Pro. At the original $999 launch price it is a weak buy — current Pro models offer larger batteries and newer silicon, and its endurance trails even the non-Pro 15 Plus. The discounted tier is where it makes sense. Swappa’s live October 15, 2026 index puts the lowest used listing at $433 and the average at $591, with the iPhone 17 Pro’s used low at $773. PCMag’s review page showed carrier stock at $599.99 from T-Mobile, ZDNET listed renewed units from $683, and PCMag listed verified refurbished from $674. A Reddit buyer paid $700 in late 2024 for a 128GB unit with 100% battery health and AppleCare+ with a year remaining. Whatever you pay, check battery health (80% or more is preferable), activation lock, AppleCare+ transfer status and repair history.
Which model this is
This page covers the iPhone 15 Pro (2023), model numbers A2848 (US) and A2849 — the 6.1-inch sibling of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which has a 6.7-inch display and the 5x tetraprism telephoto. The US model is eSIM-only, with no physical SIM tray. It comes in Black, White, Blue and Natural Titanium, and was discontinued on September 9, 2024, following the iPhone 16 Pro announcement; Apple’s community team says it will receive iOS updates and service until at least 2028.
