Apple iPad Air 11-inch: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-17
Summary
The iPad Air 11-inch (M4, 2026) rarely breaks — the problems are compromises: a 60Hz LCD while the iPad Pro uses a 120Hz OLED, no Face ID, no water or dust resistance, and accessories that push the total near $1,000. Running costs are AppleCare+ from $5.99 a month plus one-time accessory purchases. It is a strong buy at $599-649, still good at the $749 price set in June 2026, and weak at $849 and up, where the iPad Pro M5 takes over.
Common problems and fixes
- 60Hz LCD display — the most common criticism: the panel is unchanged from the M3 generation while the iPad Pro M5 uses a 120Hz OLED; there is no fix on this model, and Wirecutter wants Apple to upgrade the panel. [6][2]
- No Face ID, and Touch ID can be inconsistent — PCMag’s sensor “only recognized my print on the first read about half the time”; the fallback is the passcode. [2]
- Battery life is unremarkable — Tom’s Guide’s entry-level iPad outlasted the Air (11h 25m vs 9h 44m), PCMag’s video loop ran 7h 44m, and the included 20W adapter needs 1h 41m for a full recharge; carry the charger on heavy days. [5][2]
- Accessories push the total near $1,000 — the Magic Keyboard ($269) and Apple Pencil Pro ($129) are not included; budget for them or skip the laptop-replacement plan. [3][2]
- 128GB base storage may be too small — PCMag questioned why base iPads still start at 128GB; the 256GB model costs $849 after the June 2026 increase. [2]
Parts and consumables
- Magic Keyboard — $269 (Apple, October 2026); the laptop-replacement accessory. [3][2]
- Apple Pencil Pro — $129 (Apple, October 2026). [3][2]
- Smart Folio — $79 (Apple, October 2026). [3]
Yearly running cost
AppleCare+ starts at $5.99 a month on top of the 12-month limited warranty. [1] The only other spending is one-time: accessories (Magic Keyboard $269, Apple Pencil Pro $129, Smart Folio $79, all Apple, October 2026) and eventually a battery service, whose cost is not reported. [3][2] There are no required subscriptions. Not enough data for a full yearly figure beyond the AppleCare+ fee.
When it is a good buy
- At $599-649 (launch pricing or a sale) it was strong value and the best tablet for most users. [2][5]
- At $749 (the price after the June 25, 2026 increase) it is still $450 below the iPad Pro M5 at $1,199, but Wirecutter advises waiting for a sale. [6][9]
- Walmart had it at $747 and B&H at $749.00 as of the October 2026 check. [2][8]
- At $849 and up (256GB and above) the iPad Pro M5 is the more compelling choice for the display, Face ID and Thunderbolt. [9]
- The entry-level iPad at $399 handles basic tasks if the Air’s power is more than you need. [6]
