Apple MacBook Neo 13-inch: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-17
Summary
The MacBook Neo’s fixed 8 GB of memory is the thing that usually goes wrong: it maxes out under modest multitasking and cannot be upgraded, and the missing keyboard backlight, mechanical trackpad and two-port layout are permanent compromises. Keeping it running costs about $50 a year if you add AppleCare+, plus one-off spending on external storage or a USB-A dongle because the 256 GB SSD is soldered. It is a good buy at the $599 launch price, fair at $699 after the June 2026 increase, and weak above $700, where the MacBook Air M5 makes more sense.
Common problems and fixes
- 8 GB memory maxes out — Wirecutter had it “completely maxed out” with about 20 Chrome tabs, Slack and YouTube running, and PCMag hit the same wall in multitasking; the memory is soldered, so there is no hardware fix — close tabs and apps instead. [3][2]
- Battery drains fast at full brightness — Wirecutter measured about 6 hours at full brightness against 14 hours at one-third brightness, and one Reddit owner saw a 7% drop in 30 minutes with a single tab open; lower the brightness. [3][8]
- Charging stops at 80% — macOS optimized battery charging does this by default and some owners find it confusing; “Charge to Full Now” overrides it. [7]
- No backlit keyboard — the keyboard has no backlight on either model, which PCMag says night owls will notice; no fix, it is a design omission. [1][2]
- Limited ports — two USB-C (one only USB 2.0 at 480 Mbps), no Thunderbolt, HDMI, SD card slot or MagSafe; a USB-C hub or dongle is the workaround. [2][3]
- Mechanical trackpad — no Force Touch or Haptic Touch, so the pad physically clicks; no fix. [2]
- No Touch ID on the 256 GB model — it uses a standard lock button; the 512 GB model adds Touch ID. [1][2]
- Sustained pro workloads lag — Wirecutter saw beach balls in complex photo and video editing, and PCMag’s Lightroom and 8K video stress test hit the same ceiling; that work belongs on an M-series Mac. [3][9]
Parts and consumables
- SSD — 256 GB or 512 GB, soldered and not upgradeable; owners budget for external storage instead. [2][3]
Yearly running cost

When it is a good buy
- Macworld’s guide listed $628 at Walmart and $689 at B&H at the time of the October 2026 check; Wirecutter’s buying options showed $698 at Walmart and $699 at Best Buy. [6][3]
- Above $700 the value weakens: the MacBook Air M5 is the better choice if you need more memory, a better display and more ports. [3][6]
