Apple iPad (7th generation, 10.2-inch, 2019): problems, parts and running costs

Checked: 2026-10-21

Summary

The problems with a 2019 iPad 7 are mostly age rather than defects: a worn battery shows up as the charge draining while the tablet is plugged in and as reboots or boot loops at 1%, and a cracked screen can take the fingerprint reader with it. Running one costs almost nothing, since there is no subscription and no consumable and the electricity works out to about $2.78 a year at an illustrative $0.20 per kWh, but repairs run from $39.99 for a battery part to $109.99 for an LCD before labor. It is worth buying under $60 with a proven battery and clean activation, weak value at $100 to $120 where a used iPad 8 sits around $100, and above $125 to $140 you should get an iPad 9 instead.

Parts and consumables

Yearly running cost

An iPad 7 costs $0 a year to run: there is no subscription, no filter and no consumable. Electricity: the pack holds 32.4Wh, so one full equivalent charge a day at an assumed 85% wall-to-battery efficiency works out to 38.1Wh a day, or 13.9kWh a year, which is about $2.78 a year at an illustrative $0.20 per kWh. Neither the efficiency figure nor the rate is an owner measurement, so treat that as a sketch. The real money is one-off repair: a battery part alone is $39.99 and an LCD is $109.99, and no source gives a failure age for this generation, so no defensible average annual repair bill can be given.

When it is a good buy

Prices checked October 21, 2026: Back Market listed a 2019 iPad 7 32GB Wi-Fi space gray at $94.00 in Fair condition, with the same page showing Good at $107.00, Excellent at $109.95, Premium at $132.00 and 128GB around $137; Swappa’s average asking price for 32GB Wi-Fi units was $114 on Oct 2, 2026 and $138 for 128GB, with listings from $93; Walmart Restored had a 32GB space gray unit at $84; Plug.tech listed a refurbished iPad 7 at $129. A $54 A2197 32GB line at Simple Cell Bulk looks like bulk inventory, and the minimum order size, return rights and battery state there were not established.

Named alternatives: the iPad 8 (2020), used from about $100 on Swappa, keeps the same home-button and Lightning layout but has the faster A12 Bionic and iPadOS 26 support, and it is the better pick when the price gap is small. The iPad 9 (2021), used from about $149 on Swappa, has an A13 Bionic, 64GB of base storage and iPadOS 27 support, and it is the better pick when you want a longer software runway. [17][18][23][25]
