Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A small edge vacuum sealer for occasional sous vide and freezer prep: three buttons, a 12-inch sealing bar and a body that fits in a drawer. Check your food before you buy — this model has no moist/dry mode, and owners report failed seals when the bag or the seal line carries moisture.

Strengths

  • Small enough to live in a drawer: 16.73 × 4.80 × 3.14 in and 2.3 lb.
  • Three buttons, so a first bag needs no manual reading.
  • Sealed in about 21 seconds in Wirecutter testing, the fastest of its picks.
  • Quiet: Wirecutter counted it among the quietest models it tested.
  • Works with generic embossed bags and rolls, which keeps bag costs down.
  • Wirecutter’s ground beef stayed sealed in the freezer for more than three years.

Weaknesses

  • No moist/dry mode, so wet food needs manual pulse control and a dry seal line.
  • Owners report inconsistent seals and air re-entering the bag, worst with moisture.
  • The lid takes noticeable force to close, awkward one-handed or with a weak grip.
  • Suction of 14.77 inHg is low, so it suits light and infrequent sealing.
  • Some owners report the vacuum function stopping after about a year.
  • Seal-only mode can be finicky after a long session, per Wirecutter’s long-term unit.

Which model this is

The ANVS01-US00 is the slim, basic Anova sealer: a single 12-inch seal bar, three buttons and a plastic body. Anova’s product page sells it as the Precision Vacuum Sealer with a 2-year limited warranty, and some listings print the suffix as ANVS01-USOO. The listing for this page is ASIN B09L4XQF9D. Do not confuse it with the Precision Vacuum Sealer Pro (ANV02US00), which adds a double seal bar, moist and pulse modes, a roll holder, a cutter and an accessory port, or with the Precision Chamber sealer, which pulls air into a chamber instead.

How it seals, and where it fails

Wirecutter tested this exact model and called it the budget pick for small spaces. It sealed ground beef, pork, crackers, nuts and raspberries, ran about 21 seconds per bag, and belonged to the quietest group of machines in its test. Its beef seal held for more than three years in the freezer and pantry.

Owners are less uniform. The recurring complaint is moisture: “if there is even a hint of moisture, the vacuum sealer fails to seal,” and some owners report a failed seal roughly one bag in four to one in five. With no moist/dry mode, the workaround is manual — pulse the vacuum, pre-freeze liquids, and dry the seal line before closing the lid. Some owners also report the vacuum function stopping after about a year of use, and one Wirecutter staffer who has run the machine since 2019 says seal-only mode sometimes needs a few forceful pushes after a long session. Because seal consistency varies so much between owners, test the machine in the first week while returns are still easy.

Bags, running costs and repairs

Ten precut bags come in the box, and there is no proprietary bag lock-in: channeled bags from any maker work, including rolls, which keeps the ongoing cost of bags low. Anova has no confirmed model-specific parts channel for this model, so the practical spares are aftermarket — foam replacement gaskets and seal-bar tape for Anova sealers cost about $14 a kit (2026).

Routine care is simple and follows the product documentation: wipe the sealing strip and gasket, keep moisture off the seal line, let the unit cool between sealings, and check that the bag sits flat over the air intake. That documentation also lists the usual culprits behind a failed seal: wrinkles, crumbs, grease and liquids in the bag, debris or distortion on the foam gasket, and an overheated heating element that needs time to cool.

Size, noise and daily handling

The case is the pitch: about 17 inches wide and 4 inches deep, light enough to lift with one hand, and small enough to store in a drawer. Wirecutter found it among the quietest machines in its group and had it sealing in about 21 seconds per bag. Sous Vide Wizard describes setup as plug-in-and-use with a vacuum-and-seal cycle under 30 seconds.

The rough edges are mechanical. The lid needs noticeable force to close, which is awkward one-handed or with limited hand strength, and one long-term Wirecutter staffer still calls the machine a “total workhorse.” Power is published as 120 V, 80 W by Sous Vide Wizard, while one retailer listing states 110 V; Anova’s own product page does not state a voltage.

Is it worth it?

For occasional sealing in a small kitchen, the price matters less than the size. Anova’s product page showed $89.00 with a sale price of $74.00 when checked in October 2026. Wirecutter listed a Walmart buying option at $74, and HuffPost Life saw it at $74 and up at Target. At or under about $75 it is strong value for a beginner; between $76 and $90 it is fair; above $90 it is weak, because the Anova Pro at about $110 adds 25.1 inHg suction, a double seal bar, moist and pulse modes, a roll holder, a cutter and an accessory port. The real difference between the two is size and simplicity, not suction.
