Writing experience and software
The Kindle Scribe delivers a strong writing experience with its battery-free pen. Reviewers consistently praise the responsive pen feel and the large, sharp screen. However, the software has notable limitations. The pen lacks pressure sensitivity, and handwritten notes cannot be converted to text. Templates are limited, and PDF annotation works best with files sent through Send to Kindle. Notebooks can be viewed in the Kindle mobile app but not edited. Digital Trends called it “decidedly niche” by design, though Gizmodo noted that updates could fix many of the software shortcomings. Later firmware added the ability to write on PDFs transferred over USB.
Battery life and cold weather
Battery life is a standout feature. Reviewers report about half a charge remaining after a week or more of mixed reading and note-taking. Amazon’s specifications claim up to 12 weeks of battery life for reading and 3 weeks for writing. However, recent reports mention battery drain across several Kindle models after a 2026 firmware release, though this claim is not specific to the Scribe. The device performs well in normal temperatures, but no cold weather performance data was found.
Storage and value
The 32 GB tier is most useful for large PDF, comic, or manga libraries. There is no microSD slot for expansion. At the 2022 launch list price of about $390 for the 32 GB model with Premium Pen, reviewers called it expensive “for what is essentially an ereader with extras.” The model is reportedly discontinued at some resellers, and buyers are more likely to find leftover, refurbished, or used stock. A discounted used or refurbished unit makes more sense than paying near launch pricing, especially when newer Scribe models are available.
Which model this is
ASIN B0BQQ5Y313 (likely 2022 first generation, unconfirmed). Three different Scribe hardware lines exist: 2022 model (this one), 2024 model (new design, same software), and 2025 models (front light, Colorsoft version). The 2022 model was released on 2022-11-30. Check which pen a listing includes, as bundles come with either Basic or Premium Pen.
