Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A camera-free bedside smart alarm clock with a 2.83-inch touchscreen, Alexa voice control and ultrasonic motion detection.

Strengths

  • No camera and no on-screen ads, which makes it a rare bedroom-friendly Echo.
  • The touchscreen is bright and easy to read, with six clock faces and a red nighttime mode.
  • Ultrasonic motion detection triggers Alexa routines as you walk into the room.
  • Alexa responses are snappy, and setup is a quick QR-code scan.
  • The speaker is detailed enough for sleep sounds, audiobooks and background music.
  • Drop In works as an intercom, and it stereo-pairs with a second Spot.

Weaknesses

  • The bass is weak and distorts at maximum volume; The Guardian reports it dropping out above 70% volume.
  • The 240 x 320 screen is low-resolution, dims off-center, and leaves the top half looking “cheap and unfinished”.
  • You cannot set alarms on the screen, and the snooze and stop buttons are very small.
  • There is no backup battery, so a power outage kills your alarms.
  • It cannot act as an Eero mesh extender, despite some listings claiming otherwise.

Sound quality

The 1.73-inch front-firing mono driver is the most divided feature. PCMag found the bass “poppy” with no thump, distorting at maximum volume on a bass test track, while the mids and treble stay reasonably detailed for the size; it is loud enough to fill a living room without distortion. The Guardian reports the bass drops out above 70% volume and rates it “about as good as a small Bluetooth speaker, but not as good as an Echo Dot”. The Independent’s UK reviewer heard “a good amount of bass”, loud without rattling, with strong vocals. The Verge says it is good for music, sleep sounds and audiobooks in bed, with clearer vocals than the Echo Pop but less room-filling than the Dot.

Alarms, smart home and privacy

The alarm clock features are the real reason to buy one: five alarm tones on device with more in the Alexa app, music alarms, a next-alarm display, six clock faces in six colors, and a red nighttime mode for dark rooms. Ultrasonic motion detection triggers presence-based routines.

Privacy is the selling point. There is no camera and no video of any kind, and no ads on the small screen, unlike the Echo Show’s slideshows. Smart-home control is voice-first — there is no on-screen device list, and controls appear only after a voice command — though it works as a Matter controller over Wi-Fi. Setup requires the Alexa app and an Amazon account, with 17 mandatory agreements. Amazon Sidewalk support is built in, and PCMag recommends deactivating it for security. One listing claim is flat wrong: some pages advertise an “eero Built-in extender, up to 1000 sq ft”, but The Verge, PCMag and TechRadar all state the 2024 Spot cannot act as an Eero mesh extender, unlike the Echo Dot and Echo Pop. Only a retailer spec sheet lists “eero built-in”. Do not buy it for this feature.

Running costs and value

Ownership costs are modest. Music beyond the alarm tones means a streaming subscription, and an optional charging stand with USB-C and USB-A ports costs $29.99 (PCMag). The warranty is one year, and The Guardian says the Spot is generally repairable and will receive security updates for at least four years after it is discontinued. No long-term reliability or failure-rate data exists. The original 2017 Echo Spot drew mass complaints of flickering screens; no equivalent pattern has been reported for the 2024 model.

Value is the catch. Best Buy had it at $50 in July 2024 and $55 in August 2024, and TechRadar saw a $44.99 introductory deal in July 2024 — the prices reviewers called compelling. By June 2026 PCMag listed $109 at Best Buy, and Abt’s August 2024 snapshot was $109.99.

Is it worth it?

If you want a voice-controlled bedside alarm clock with a small screen, no camera and no ads, the 2024 Spot does the job well — buy it on sale. At $50–55 it is a strong buy for a nightstand; from $56–70 it is fair value if the form factor matters more than audio; at $109 it is hard to justify next to the Echo Dot. If music is the priority, or you want a backup battery, a temperature sensor or an Eero extender, the Spot has none of those.

Which model this is

This page covers the Echo Spot (2024 release), the third-generation Spot and the current bedside alarm clock with Alexa. It comes in Black, Glacier White and Ocean Blue; the Ocean Blue variant is ASIN B0BFC8DR7C. Do not confuse it with the original 2017 Echo Spot, discontinued in 2019, which had a camera, a round 2.5-inch screen and a 3.5 mm jack, or with the Echo Show line or the Echo Dot With Clock.
