Summary
A mid-size Alexa smart display for 2025 with an 8.7-inch screen, a 13 MP camera and a dedicated 2.8-inch woofer, plus a built-in Zigbee, Matter and Thread hub. Check two things before buying: the camera has no physical privacy shutter, and the screen does not tilt unless you add the optional stand.
Strengths
- Bright, responsive 8.7-inch screen with narrow bezels and a 13 MP auto-framing camera.
- Dedicated 2.8-inch woofer gives stronger bass than the 2023 model.
- AZ3 Pro chip makes voice response and multitasking faster.
- Complete smart-home hub with Zigbee, Matter, Thread and Wi-Fi 6E.
- Omnisense presence sensing improves Visual ID and adaptive brightness.
- PCMag awarded it Editors’ Choice as Amazon’s best smart display for most households.
Weaknesses
- No physical camera shutter; the lens is never physically covered.
- Screen does not tilt or swivel without the optional stand.
- Interface is crowded and confusing.
- Audio distorts and turns harsh above roughly 75% volume.
- Full-screen sponsored ads cannot be fully disabled.
- Value weakens at the top of the price range, where the older generation costs much less.

Audio
The clearest upgrade is sound. PCMag reported the display fills a medium room at 50% volume and that microphones still catch commands over music at 75% volume. TechRadar’s listening was more mixed, praising room-filling character but noting muddy vocals on some tracks. No instrumented frequency-response data was found for this model.
Camera, privacy and ads
The 13 MP camera sits centered above the screen with auto-framing and 3.3x digital zoom, and Visual ID and Omnisense presence sensing use the camera along with audio, ultrasound, Wi-Fi radar and an accelerometer. The physical shutter from the 2023 model is gone; the camera is cut in software and by a hardware mute button, and the lens is never physically covered. TechRadar notes a stick-on shutter or tape as a workaround. Full-screen sponsored ads appear across Echo Show devices, including between photos and content cards, and the company confirmed they cannot be switched off entirely. Users report workarounds such as switching to Canadian English or enabling Kids Mode, and an Alexa routine to start Photo Frame on a schedule.
Smart home and connectivity
Built-in Zigbee, Matter, Thread Border Router and Sidewalk make it a complete hub for an Alexa home, and Wi-Fi 6E is included. It cannot act as a relay in an Eero mesh network. The body measures 5.9 × 8.2 × 5.0 in, deeper and taller than the 2023 model’s 4.2 × 7.9 × 5.5 in, and uses a smaller spherical base instead of the earlier full-width hump. The screen is fixed-angle, so the optional stand is needed for adjustment. There is no line-out port and no HDR support. Blacks on video content trend toward grey.
Alexa+ and ongoing costs
Alexa+ was free during early access and is planned at $19.99 a month for users without a membership plan. It is included with Prime membership. Ring AI notification summaries and smart video search require Ring Premium. The optional magnetic stand costs about $40. Prime membership itself is a separate subscription and is not priced here.
Is it worth it?
Value depends on price and on whether Alexa+ matters. Below about $125 it is a straightforward upgrade on the 2023 model for audio, camera and processing, and the stand is worth adding if the unit sits low on a counter. Around $140 to $150 it is fair only if Alexa+ and the audio upgrade are priorities. Above about $180 the older generation or a smaller display is the better buy for most households. TechRadar advises buying rather than waiting, because prices are trending up and two Prime Days a year, around July and October, are the main discount windows.
Which model this is
This page covers the 2025 Echo Show 8, often called the 4th generation, with an 8.7-inch screen and an AZ3 Pro chip. Do not confuse it with the 2023 Echo Show 8 (3rd generation), which has an 8-inch 1280 × 800 screen, dual 2-inch tweeters, Wi-Fi 5 and a physical camera shutter. It is also distinct from the Echo Show 11, Echo Show 5, Echo Show 10, and the wall-mounted Echo Show 15 and 21. Colours at launch were black and white. The Amazon listing for this model is ASIN B0GYQGV9LX; which colour or variant that identifier maps to is not confirmed in the sources.
