Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A 2020 budget fitness tracker shaped like a watch, with 5 ATM water resistance, 60-plus sport modes and genuinely useful sleep tracking at 31 g. Check for built-in GPS before you buy: this model has none, so every outdoor route depends on your phone.

Strengths

  • Very light at 31 g and comfortable for 15-plus hours a day over weeks of continuous wear.
  • Sleep tracking picks up REM and afternoon naps, which the Bip S and Bip S Lite cannot do.
  • Gorilla Glass 3 survived drops and scrapes over a month of daily use without scratching.
  • A standard 20 mm strap swaps for any off-the-shelf band.
  • 5 ATM water resistance covers swimming and showers.
  • The screen stays readable outdoors at full brightness, with decent touch response.

Weaknesses

  • No built-in GPS: every outdoor route, distance and pace comes from the paired phone.
  • The “up to 9 days” battery claim only holds under a light duty cycle; measured results were about four days and five days heavy.
  • Heart rate spiked to the limit during some workouts, and the step counter over-reports.
  • The Zepp app duplicates settings, greys out unsupported fields and syncs slowly.
  • There is no always-on display.

GPS and outdoor tracking

The defining limitation is the absence of GPS. Route, distance and pace all come from the paired phone, so a run without a phone records no route at all. Two first-party-adjacent pages get this wrong: Amazfit India’s refurbished Bip U page advertises “High-precision GPS,” and Manua.ls’s prose says the watch “features GPS functionality” while its own spec table says no. TechRadar’s comparison table is explicit that the Bip U has no built-in GPS. If you want to run without your phone, this is the wrong device.

Battery life and charging

Amazfit’s “up to 9 days” assumes a 10-minute heart-rate interval, 50 notifications a day, 200 screen wakes, one 30-minute outdoor run and two SpO2 readings daily. GSMArena’s heavier configuration, with one-minute heart rate, 50% brightness, sleep tracking plus breathing quality plus all-day stress and 100-plus notifications, yielded about four days. TechRadar reported five days heavy and about a week light-to-medium. Charging was better than claimed, at roughly 1 h 45 m against a stated 2 hours. Screen timeout is configurable from 5 to 15 s, and only on the watch, not in the app.

Sensors, sleep and the app

Owners of the adjacent Bip U Pro report the same family of problems, with sketchy heart rate, unreliable sleep and poor step counting. The Zepp app is the other recurring complaint, with duplicate settings, greyed-out unsupported fields, notifications capped at 10, incomplete app icons and a watch that sometimes takes a long time to reconnect and sync. SMS quick-replies are limited to three defaults, editable up to 140 characters.

Repairs, parts and running costs

There is no official parts channel and no published battery-replacement procedure for this model, and the battery is internal. A third-party parts seller lists an “Amazfit Bip … 225 mAh” replacement cell next to a Bip U category page, but that listing is not Bip U-specific. The strap is the only genuinely user-replaceable part, and it accepts any standard 20 mm strap. There is no subscription and no accessory lock-in, so the only consumable-style replacement is the strap. Because the model is discontinued, a dead Bip U is a replacement purchase, not a repair. Amazfit’s general warranty covers manufacturing defects and excludes normal wear and tear; its product-manual boilerplate states a 12-month limited warranty, though no Bip U-specific warranty document was located.

Is it worth it?

At its 2020 launch price of INR 3,999, about $55, it delivered 5 ATM, a durable Gorilla Glass screen, a standard strap and genuinely good sleep tracking. Amazfit India lists a refurbished Bip U at INR 999 against a struck-through INR 5,999. Aztek Computers lists the Bip U Pro at $103.58 as a special order, but that is the Pro, not this model. Today, Amazfit’s own Bip 5 is $89.99 and the Bip Max is $99.99, with bigger, brighter displays, onboard GPS and far longer battery life for the same money. Paying more than roughly $80 for a Bip U means paying a premium for a discontinued sensor stack with no GPS.

Which model this is

This page covers the Bip U, model W2017OV1N, with a US manual edition cataloged as A2017; colors are Black, Pink and Green. It was released in October 2020. The Amazon listing for the Bip U is ASIN B08JS2SKNL.

Don’t confuse it with the Bip U Pro (W2008OV1N), which adds built-in GPS and GLONASS, a microphone and Alexa, or with the Bip S and Bip S Lite, which use 200 mAh cells and 1.28-inch transflective displays.
