Summary

A 5-ply bonded stainless steel saucepan with a brushed exterior, made in the USA and rated oven-safe to 600°F.

Strengths

  • 5-ply bonded construction with a steel core, All-Clad’s top bonded range.
  • Rated oven and broiler safe to 600°F and induction compatible.
  • Double-riveted stainless steel handles and flared, drip-free pouring edges.
  • Made in the USA with a limited lifetime warranty.
  • Available in brushed or polished finish.

Weaknesses

  • Handwash only, with no dishwasher-safe claim.
  • At $219.99 direct, you pay a clear premium over D3 tri-ply for the extra layers.
  • Overheating and high heat discolor the steel, and salt added too early can pit the surface.
  • A hot pan must never go under cold water, which can warp it.

Construction and cooking

All-Clad builds the D5 from five alternating layers of stainless steel and aluminum with a steel core, which the company says spreads heat evenly; the interior is 18/10 stainless and the exterior is brushed stainless on this model, with the polished SD55203 as the alternative. Edges are flared for drip-free pouring and the handles are double-riveted stainless. All-Clad markets D5 as its premier bonded range, above the tri-ply D3, though that is positioning rather than a test result.

Care and upkeep

The pan is handwash only, and All-Clad recommends preheating on low to medium heat, reserving high heat for boiling. Above 500°F the steel can change colour without affecting performance, and overheating can leave brown or blue stains. For those, All-Clad suggests white vinegar, and a 1:1 vinegar-water boil for hard water spots. To avoid small pits, add salt only once the liquid boils or food is cooking, and never set a hot pan in cold water. A limited lifetime warranty covers the cookware.

What it costs

All-Clad’s US site listed the BD55203 at $219.99 and showed it out of stock (October 2026), with the 1.5 qt at $149.99 and the 2 qt at $199.99 on the same page. For less, CNET has named the D3 7-piece set, which includes a 3 qt saucepan, its best overall at around $600. There are no consumables to buy. Choosing the D5 pan on its own is mostly a bet on the extra steel layer, and no independent test compares D5 and D3 at this size.

Is it worth it?

As a single pan, the D5 3 qt is a premium buy with no instrumented test behind it, so the safest call is to choose D5 when you want the heaviest-layered All-Clad build and can accept handwashing, and D3 when value matters more. Owner sentiment for this exact pan could not be retrieved, so treat the brand reputation, not pan-specific reviews, as the basis for buying.

Which model this is

This page covers the All-Clad D5 Stainless Brushed 5-ply bonded 3 qt saucepan with lid, model BD55203, UPC 011644012199. The polished version of the same pan is SD55203, UPC 011644010140. It is not the D5 3 qt saute pan (BD55403 / SD55403) and not the D3 Everyday 3 qt saucepan, which is tri-ply. The listing is ASIN B0051OERQS.
