Summary
Two things to settle before buying: the straight concave handle divides owners, and All-Clad says handwash only even though some sellers claim it is dishwasher-safe.
Strengths
- Heats evenly: Wirecutter measured a 30-degree spread across the pan, against 80+ on some rivals.
- Wirecutter has recommended D3 skillets since 2014 and named the 10-piece set a buy-it-for-life upgrade pick.
- Consumer Reports rated the D3 line excellent for cooking evenness and food release.
- Owners report 20+ year lifespans, and Wirecutter staff call the pans clean after a decade of heavy use.
- Induction-compatible, oven-safe to 600°F, and free of any consumable costs.
- Individual pieces are sold open stock, so one damaged pan does not mean a new set.
Weaknesses
- The straight concave handle gets mixed reviews; CNET and Wirecutter both call it polarizing.
- The 12-inch fry pan has no helper handle, which Wirecutter flags for anyone with wrist pain or limited strength.
- Handwash only per All-Clad, despite some retailer pages claiming dishwasher safety.
- Some owners report warping over time, especially saute pans, and All-Clad does not acknowledge it.
- Overheating discolors the polished exterior; All-Clad says that is cosmetic and does not affect performance.
- The set costs $1,299.99 at All-Clad direct (October 2026), a large upfront spend.

Heating and cooking performance
Wirecutter’s long-term testing found a 30-degree difference between the hottest and coldest spots on the 12-inch skillet, where some competitors measured 80+ degrees. CNET’s 2025 test saw variances under 15 degrees and heating as fast as any stainless skillet it tried. Consumer Reports rated the D3 line excellent for evenness and food release. The pans handled every job in Wirecutter’s kitchen without trouble, and after a decade of heavy use they cleaned up looking new.
Handles and ergonomics
The D3 handle is a straight, concave bar that Wirecutter likens to a metallic celery stalk, and it splits opinion: CNET called it fine but not a favourite next to rounder handles, and Wirecutter says some grips simply do not suit it. The 12-inch fry pan also has no helper handle, which Wirecutter singles out as a problem for cooks with wrist pain or limited strength. The newer D3 Everyday line uses a thicker rounded handle and adds that helper handle.
Care, warping and repairs
All-Clad says the set is handwash only and warns against oven cleaners, steel wool, bleach and putting a hot pan into cold water, which can warp it. Retailer pages that advertise it as dishwasher-safe disagree with the manufacturer; follow All-Clad. Overheating can leave brown or blue stains that All-Clad says are cosmetic. Some owners on r/cookware and r/BuyItForLife report warping over years of use, particularly with saute pans, but nobody publishes a failure rate, so treat it as a known risk rather than a defect. Pieces are sold open stock, so a single damaged pan can be replaced without buying a new set, and the limited lifetime warranty covers manufacturing defects.
What it costs
All-Clad direct listed the set at $1,299.99 in October 2026 against a $1,679.99 list, and MetroKitchen and Reading China show similar figures at $1,299.95 and $1,299.99. Pepper Mill was higher at $1,799.95. There are no consumables to buy, so the running cost is the occasional replacement piece, and at the sale figure the per-piece math works out to roughly $93 per piece or about $130 per vessel. If you only need a few vessels, a smaller D3 set or open-stock pieces can cost less.
Which model this is
This page covers the D3 Stainless 3-ply bonded 14-piece set, model 401716L, SKU 8400002448, UPC 011644502683. It is not the D3 10-piece, 13-piece or 7-piece sets, and not the newer D3 Everyday line, which uses a rounded handle. The Amazon listing for this set is ASIN B004ZR4G6S.
