Summary
A USA-made tri-ply stainless set that has held Wirecutter’s upgrade pick since 2017, built for households that cook for decades. Before you buy, know the catch: stainless punishes sloppy heat control, so sticking and staining are technique problems you will need to learn around.
Strengths
- Consumer Reports rated this exact model excellent for cooking evenness and food release.
- Instrumented tests show the D3 heats up faster than the heavier D5.
- Tri-ply bonding runs to the rim, not just across the base.
- Owners report years of daily use with no warping and no loss of heat distribution.
- Handles stay cool enough on the stovetop to hold without a potholder.
Weaknesses
- Food sticks when the heat is too high or the pan is not preheated; owners call the learning curve frustrating.
- Overheating leaves blue, brown and rainbow stains; they are cosmetic and not covered by warranty.
- The limited lifetime warranty excludes wear and tear: discoloration, scratches and reduced release.
- Four lids for six pans, and they are not interchangeable across pieces in this line.
- Straight rims on the saucepans and stockpot make pouring messier than flared-rim designs.
- At 25.9 lb the set is heavy, and owners say the stockpot is hard to handle when full.

How it heats
The D3 hit 376°F at the center after 1 minute against the D5’s 309°F, and led 451°F to 440°F at 2 minutes. The D5 spread heat more evenly — a 30°F center-to-edge gap against the D3’s 45°F — and held 152°F after five minutes off the heat against the D3’s 132°F. The D3 fry pan also weighs 2.8 lb against the D5’s 3.2 lb. In the kitchen that means a faster preheat and lighter handling, at the cost of hotter spots toward the edges.
Warranty, care and running costs
The limited lifetime warranty covers manufacturer’s defects and explicitly excludes “wear and tear associated with use” — discoloration, surface scratches and reduced release are named. All-Clad runs a repair service, and its consumer services can source many replacement parts such as lids and handles, though there is no full parts catalog the way some appliance makers offer. Handwashing is the manufacturer’s recommendation, and All-Clad’s care guidance says dishwasher use will reduce the pans’ lifespan.
Running costs are the cheap kind: Bar Keepers Friend, Bon Ami or All-Clad’s own cleaner for burnt-on residue, white vinegar for rainbow stains and hard water spots. In The Kitchn’s test, Bar Keepers Friend worked faster on the same stains than All-Clad’s branded cleaner. Pitting can form if salt goes into cold liquid before it boils; All-Clad says it hurts appearance, not performance.
Which set you are actually buying
Watch the siblings: the D3 Everyday 10-piece (model DTC40010A) has larger skillets with over 30% more surface area and interchangeable lids, while model 401877LR swaps the 3-quart saucepan for a casserole.
Is it worth it?
In October 2026 the set listed at $799.99 on All-Clad’s own site and $799.95 at KitchenKapers, marked down from a $1,149.99 MSRP; Williams Sonoma has sold it at $799.95 on sale against a $1,149.95 MSRP. Crate & Barrel has brought it as low as about $560 in promotional events. Under $600 it is strong value for a household that cooks every day. At the standard $800 it is fairly priced, with the D5 and D3 Everyday as the alternatives to weigh. Above $950 you should want the classic D3 on purpose — lighter, faster to heat, less expensive — because the D5 buys more even heat and the Everyday buys interchangeable lids.
Which model this is
This page covers the classic All-Clad D3 Stainless 3-ply 10-piece set, model 401488LR — the configuration with two saucepans, not the casserole variant. The set is sold under ASIN B005H8KD3E. Do not confuse it with the D3 Everyday line, which shares the D3 name but not the pieces.
