AIRCARE Space Saver 831000: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-17
Summary
The 831000 is a 6-gallon evaporative console humidifier, and the problems owners report cluster around the fan, the float and the wick. Keeping it running is dominated by 1043 SuperWicks, about $49.98 for two per season at Home Depot’s $24.99 each, plus electricity of roughly $20.16 a season at an assumed $0.20 per kWh. It is a fair buy around $149.99 and a poor one at the $189.99 maker-direct price.
Common problems and fixes
- Fan noise on medium and high — the most common complaint; owners describe it loud enough to disrupt conversation and run it on low in occupied rooms, raising speed when away. Not a warranty defect. [4][5][6][23]
- Float or microswitch failure means it will not start — the float rod must engage a microswitch under the cabinet, and misassembled or missing float linkage keeps the fan off even with water in the tank. Check water level, float placement, cord and humidity target before seeking service; the float and rod are cheap to replace. [2][8][23]
- Hard water loads and collapses the wick — one well-water owner got about a month of nonstop winter use from a 1043 before minerals loaded it, and the frame can become fragile. Descale the empty reservoir with the wick removed, rinse the wick only with fresh water, and replace it at season start or more often in hard water. [2][7]
- Cleaning every two weeks and odor or algae — stagnant water and a dirty wick can smell or grow biofilm. Run the tank dry, unplug, soak the cabinet with about a cup of white vinegar for 20 minutes or a teaspoon of bleach in a separate step, never mix them, and rinse the float with water only. [2][5]
- Water spills from overfilling — overfilling the cabinet can leak through a rear safety overflow opening, so fill to the FILL HERE line and keep the unit on a level, water-resistant surface. A puddle is usually a filling mistake rather than a cracked tank. [2][24]
- Misleading display codes — “CF” after 720 run hours is a check-filter reminder that resets on unplug, not proof the wick died at 720 hours; a flashing “20” can simply mean room humidity below 20%, and 65% is a continuous-run target, not a defective sensor. [2][7][12]
Parts and consumables
- 1043 SuperWick (7V1043) — $24.99 at Home Depot or $31.99 direct from AIRCARE as of October 2026; one is included with a new unit and replacement is due at the start of each season, more often in hard water. [13][27]
- Reusable 1043 wick frame (4V3398020GRYP) — $7.00 direct; keep it between wick changes and replace it if the clips crack or it warps. [16]
- Frame and wick bundle (4V3398020GRY) — $29.40 direct, useful if the plastic frame was thrown out with the old paper wick. [17]
- Bacteriostatic solution (7V1970), 32 fl oz — $11.99 direct; the maker’s dosage is one teaspoon per gallon, so a 6-gallon refill takes 6 teaspoons. [25]
- Foam float (1B5060400) — $2.52 direct; replace if it is damaged, lost or no longer buoyant, since it actuates the water-level linkage. [18]
- Float rod (1B72125) — $1.75 direct; and retainer clip (1B5460590) $0.98 direct; replace only when broken or missing. [19][31]
- Complete float and rod assembly (1B73136) — $4.20 direct, an alternative to buying the linkage pieces separately; the seller confirms 831000 compatibility. [32]
- Optional fill hose (7V4400) — $11.49 direct; attaches to a sink faucet and is not a disposable part. [10]
Yearly running cost
Parts and consumables: two 1043 SuperWicks at Home Depot’s $24.99 each is $49.98 for the season, with one wick included in the box; replacement is due at the start of each season and more often in hard water. Electricity: 70 W for 12 hours a day over 120 days is 100.8 kWh, about $20.16 at an assumed $0.20 per kWh, giving about $70.14 before water and supplies. Adding two bacteriostat bottles at $11.99 each ($23.98) brings it to about $94.12 for the season. If water hardness forces four wicks a year instead of two, add $49.98. Subscriptions: none — the machine has no app or recurring service.
When it is a good buy
Home Depot lists the 831000 at $149.99 (internet ID 206432279), Walmart’s primary listing at $149.99 with a parallel seller offer at $173.57, and Sylvane at $149.99 but backordered; AIRCARE direct lists $189.99. At $149.99 it is a fair buy for a large, connected space; at $189.99 compare the alternatives below.
- AIRCARE MA0800 Mini-Console, $149.99 — evaporative, 2.5-gallon tank, up to 2,600 sq ft and an automatic fan-speed mode; the better choice when auto output control and a smaller cabinet matter more than time between refills, but it uses a different MAF2 wick. [28]
- Vornado Evap40, $149.99 — 4-gallon dual-bottle evaporative unit, up to 1,000 sq ft, two included filters and a 5-year limited warranty; the better choice for a smaller connected area where warranty length matters. [29]
- Levoit Superior 6000S, $249.99 — 6 gallons, up to 3,000 sq ft, app controls and an included hose; the better choice only if smart controls matter more than the six-gallon top-fill design. [30]
- AIRCARE Space Saver 836000HB, $174.99 — the analog sibling at up to 2,300 sq ft, a different control revision that is not interchangeable with the 831000. [3]
