Summary

A budget 14-inch Chromebook sold under the Gateway brand, built around Intel’s Celeron N4500 with 4 GB of RAM and a 64 GB eMMC drive. Independent reviewers single out exactly that processor class as too slow for comfortable everyday use, so treat it as a spare machine for light browsing and documents, not a main laptop.

Strengths

  • Runs Chrome OS, which older 314 models booted in about eight seconds.
  • Matte ComfyView screen reduces glare, and Consumer Reports rated a 314 variant anti-reflective.
  • USB-C with DisplayPort, a USB-A port and a microSD slot cover the basics.
  • Under a low price it is a cheap entry point for a secondary machine.

Weaknesses

  • Wirecutter calls the N4500 class “too slow for even light use” and describes laggy, inconsistent performance.
  • 4 GB of RAM is below Wirecutter’s 8 GB minimum for reliable Chromebook use.
  • 64 GB eMMC is minimal; Wirecutter prefers 128 GB of storage.
  • The TN display has narrow viewing angles, weak contrast and less accurate color.
  • No touchscreen, no keyboard backlight and no fingerprint reader.
  • Wi-Fi 5 rather than Wi-Fi 6, no HDMI, and only one USB-A plus one USB-C.

Performance and the Celeron N4500

Wirecutter’s Chromebook guide recommends avoiding Intel’s N-series Celeron chips, naming the N4500 specifically and calling machines that use it “too slow for even light use” with “laggy, inconsistent performance” [3]. PCMag’s 2026 guide leaves this model out and steers buyers to Chromebook Plus devices with 8 GB of RAM and newer processors [4]. No one has instrumented this exact CBO314-1H-C476 variant, so this is a platform-level judgement about the N4500, not a measured defect rate.

Display and memory

The 14-inch panel is a 1920x1080 TN screen with a matte ComfyView finish and no touch [5]. TN panels trade viewing angles and color for cost; Consumer Reports’ test of a different 314 variant found narrow viewing angles, contrast worse than most Chromebooks it tested, and colors less accurate than on better displays [10]. The 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB eMMC are the other limits: Wirecutter puts the reliable minimum at 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage [3]. A microSD slot eases the storage squeeze [5].

Battery life and what the older tests measured

Acer claims up to 10.5 hours [5]. The independent battery numbers come from other 314 configurations: Consumer Reports measured 15.75 hours of web browsing and 8.75 hours of 4K video in an N4020 touch model [10], and TechRadar measured 12 hours 55 minutes of movie playback in an N4000 model [2]. Read those as evidence the line can last a full day of light use, not as a spec for this exact N4500, 4 GB unit.

Which model this is

This page covers the Gateway Chromebook 314, model CBO314-1H-C476, part number NX.Y5UAA.005, sold in Star Black through Acer’s US store. The Amazon listing is ASIN B0DVCBYMQY.

The 314 line has shipped since at least 2020 in many configurations: N4000, N4020, N4500 and N5100 processors, 4 or 8 GB of RAM, 32, 64 or 128 GB of storage, and HD or FHD TN or IPS panels [7][11][12].

Is it worth it?

At Acer’s listed $219.99 it is hard to justify against Chromebooks with 8 GB of RAM, a faster processor and an IPS screen [3][4]. At a sufficiently low price (under $150) it can make sense as a spare machine for single-tab browsing, Google Docs and streaming; older 314-line models were reviewed at $249-$300 in 2020-2021 [2][7][8].
