Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A screenless, front-only dash cam with an unusual 4:3 1944P frame, built-in GPS and eMMC storage instead of a memory card. Check the account requirement before you buy: the M500 records nothing until you create a 70mai account and activate it.

Strengths

  • PCWorld rated the day and night footage highly, even in a harsh night street-light scene.
  • Built-in GPS and GLONASS add time, speed and coordinates to footage for insurance claims.
  • eMMC storage removes the memory-card corruption and frame-skipping failures that 70mai argues kill many dash cams.
  • The body is minimal: one button, one USB-C port and a small footprint.
  • Feature set is deep for the class: ADAS alerts, voice control, TPMS support and parking modes.
  • Voice control and the app make pulling footage off the camera easy.

Weaknesses

  • It records nothing until you create a 70mai account and activate the camera; settings are locked behind the same account.
  • Parking surveillance and time-lapse need the separately sold hardwire kit, so the advertised features cost extra.
  • The 500mAh lithium battery is not a capacitor, and sustained parking use depends on the hardwire kit with car-battery protection.
  • The headline 2592 × 1944 output is 4:3, not 16:9, and the widescreen mode costs some detail.
  • ADAS calibration fails when the camera sits too far toward the windshield edge, at speeds below 40 km/h, or on dim or blurred lane lines.
  • Recording pauses during formatting, firmware updates and some app operations.

Account activation

The M500 will not record until you create a 70mai account and activate the camera through the app, and the settings are locked behind the same account. PCWorld’s reviewer found it intrusive, and the acquaintances he polled, “young and old”, felt the same, with two saying they would not buy one. If you want a dash cam that just works out of the box, decide on this first.

Parking mode and the hardwire kit

Parking surveillance is advertised but conditional. G-sensor event recording and the time-lapse mode that compresses 30 minutes of footage into 1 minute both require the separately sold 70mai hardwire kit. On battery alone the 500mAh cell only supports emergency locking and G-sensor functions; sustained parking recording runs off the car through the hardwire kit with low-voltage protection. The battery is lithium, not a capacitor, so heat tolerance matters in a hot climate; 70mai rates the working range at -20°C to 70°C.

Storage, footage and upkeep

Storage is built-in eMMC 5.1 in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB versions, with no microSD slot. PCWorld measured roughly 200MB per minute of high-resolution footage, which puts a 32GB unit at about 2.5 to 3 hours, and recommends the largest capacity. No parts or service documentation for the M500 was found beyond the official support pages, so do not count on user-replaceable internals. The mount uses heat-resistant adhesive, and 70mai warrants the camera for one year in the US and two years in the EU, which PCWorld calls about average for dash cams.

Troubleshooting

The official support pages list the usual friction. ADAS calibration fails if the camera is mounted too far toward the windshield edge, if you calibrate below 40 km/h, or if the lane lines are too dim or blurred. The camera stops recording while it formats internal memory, restores factory settings, updates firmware, or works with the app’s album, and the fix for an internal-memory error is to format on the voice prompts. iPhones can throw a “Cannot join the network” prompt when connecting to the camera’s Wi-Fi hotspot, fixed by re-selecting the hotspot and forgetting then rejoining the network. GPS route data can go missing without open sky, about 3 minutes of waiting, a moving car, a synced app, or phone network for the map.

Is it worth it?

At the $90 to $110 range PCWorld listed at its September 2024 review (32GB $90, 64GB $100, 128GB $110), the M500 is strong value for a 1944P front-only cam with GPS, ADAS and eMMC storage, as long as you accept the account requirement. Above about $130 it weakens: buyers paying more should expect 4K resolution, a capacitor-based parking mode, or a wider service network, and the newer 70mai A510 sits in the same 1944P class with a Sony STARVIS sensor. Treat those figures as review-era reference points, not a quote for today.

Which model this is

This page covers the screenless single-channel M500, sold in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB eMMC versions. It is the older 1944P model in the M series; 70mai now leads with 4K models (A810, 4K Omni) and positions the A510 as the successor in the same 1944P class. Do not confuse it with the A510, A810, M310 or the 4K Omni. The US listing is ASIN B0G3GV73T5.
