Summary

A budget front (optional dual) dash cam built around a Sony IMX335 5 MP sensor recording 2592×1944 at 30 fps, with a 140° F1.8 lens, built-in GPS, lane-departure and forward-collision alerts, and a phone app. Check whether you need parking surveillance before buying: it records only after a G-sensor trigger with no pre-event buffer, needs a separately sold hardwire kit, and runs on a 500 mAh lithium-polymer battery instead of a supercapacitor.

Strengths

  • Strong day video detail (plates, signs) for the price.
  • Built-in GPS and ADAS at this price point.
  • A well-regarded phone app for a budget brand.
  • Simple adhesive-sticker installation that starts recording with the car.
  • 140° F1.8 lens picks up useful night detail.

Weaknesses

  • Lithium-polymer battery instead of a supercapacitor; heat exposure risk in parked cars.
  • Parking surveillance is non-buffered and needs a separately sold hardwire kit.
  • The 1944P image is 4:3, narrower than the usual 16:9 dash-cam frame.
  • Rear camera (RC06) is a clear step down from the front unit.
  • No voice control; documented ADAS, GPS and time-reset glitches.
  • Two conflicting dimension figures and an unresolved microSD limit (128 GB vs 256 GB on some aggregator pages).

Video and app

Night rural roads are weaker than lit city streets. The app connects over the camera’s own Wi-Fi hotspot, which some phones handle less smoothly. GPS logs speed and coordinates for in-app viewing, and ADAS (lane departure and forward collision) was judged by an experienced owner at about 80% accuracy.

Parking mode and heat

The parking mode is the part to understand before purchase. It records only after a G-sensor trigger, with no pre-event video, and only works with the separately sold 70mai hardwire kit; the box contains a plain cigarette-lighter cable. In hot weather the unit can shut itself down to protect the lithium battery, which also disables collision-triggered recording, and 70mai advises heat-shield film and avoiding direct sun when parked. Owners in India have reported overheating shutdowns above roughly 45 °C ambient. Firmware updates have bricked at least some units, with confusion between Chinese and international firmware versions, and one owner found unsecured telnet and FTP accessible on the latest firmware.

Reliability and warranty

Support and repairability are thin. The 12-month warranty applies only through the official store; it is void for products from unauthorized resellers, and after 30 days replacement or repair is not accepted. Reported issues include parking-mode non-entry, time resetting on every boot, missing GPS data in downloaded videos, ADAS calibration failures, and an official FAQ entry for automatic restarts attributed to unstable power or a faulty card. Using a high-endurance microSD card is the standard owner and retailer advice.

Is it worth it?

At roughly $70–90 (2023–2025 snapshots from non-retail sources), the A500S-1 is an easy recommendation for a first dash cam: 1944P front video, built-in GPS and ADAS, dual-channel expandability and a competent app. Past about $100 the lack of a supercapacitor, buffered parking mode and deep independent testing make established alternatives the better bet. Expect to budget for a high-endurance card and, for parking surveillance, the hardwire kit and possibly professional installation.

Which model this is

This page covers the 2021 Pro Plus+, hardware model A500S-1, FCC ID 2AOK9-A500S, manufactured both as “70mai Dash Cam Pro Plus+” and “70mai Dash Cam A500S.” It differs from the older Dash Cam Pro and Pro Plus A500 (different chipset, no rear-camera support) and from newer 70mai models (A510, A800S, T400). Do not confuse it with the A500S-badged E-Catalog sibling; no hardware difference was documented. The Amazon listing used as the seed is ASIN B0GD8FWBTC.
