Top cordless models have closed the gap significantly and handle daily cleaning and most carpets fine, but battery and motor size constraints still mean flagship corded vacuums generally out-suction cordless ones on deep, whole-house carpet cleaning. For quick daily cleanup and hard floors, the difference is rarely noticeable.

Models with a detangling or self-cleaning brush roll design, using anti-tangle combs or counter-rotating bristles, meaningfully reduce hair wrap versus a plain bristle brush roll. No brush roll design eliminates it entirely with long-haired pets, though -- expect to periodically clip and clear hair regardless of which model you buy.

For modern lithium-ion battery vacuums, no -- these use charging circuitry that stops topping off once full, similar to a phone, so leaving it docked between uses is the manufacturer-recommended practice and won't meaningfully shorten battery lifespan.

The main motorized floor head on most modern stick vacuums auto-detects or has a switch for carpet versus hard floor and works on both without swapping heads. Dedicated attachments -- a crevice tool, upholstery brush, or mini motorized head for stairs and furniture -- are still worth using for those specific jobs, but the primary head covers both floor types.
